Avengers: Endgame might break another box office record, surprising literally no one

Avengers: Endgame could make as much as $250 million at the box office during its opening weekend, and will probably break another Marvel record.

Avengers: Endgame is going to be one of the most talked-about movies in 2019. It’s already breaking websites, hearts, and ticket sales records, and hasn’t even been released in theaters yet. Sources estimate that the film could make anywhere from $200 million to $250 million opening weekend (April 26-28), which is, in case you weren’t sure, a lot.

Avengers: Infinity War ended up bringing in $257.6 million during its first weekend in theaters, even though it was projected to make only $185 million to $225 million. This could mean Endgame might earn way more than predicted.

And why wouldn’t it? This film is set to wrap up an overarching story that has been running film by film for over 10 years. Fans want to know how it all ends, and they probably don’t want the ending they’ve been waiting over a decade for ruined by a spoiler. Thus, Endgame‘s opening weekend will be one of the hottest tickets to get this year.

Infinity War still holds the No. 1 spot for highest-grossing opening weekends in the United States of all time, followed by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Jurassic World. It’s one of five Marvel films in the top 10, and could soon become one of six, behind Endgame.

Now, while we’re over here beyond excited that Endgame could break box-office records its opening weekend, this film has already decided to break another kind of record. Within six hours of ticket pre-sales, the film surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the most profitable yet-to-be-released movie on Fandango.

These big numbers aren’t the only mark Endgame will leave on 20th century movie history. While most films of its kind clock in at anywhere from two to two and a half hours, Endgame‘s runtime is listed at 3 hours and 58 seconds.

While it’s not the longest film ever made — technically, that title belongs to an experimental documentary called Logistics, which takes over 35 hours to watch — Endgame is the longest MCU film to date. There’s a lot of story to wrap up, so the lengthy runtime is a sacrifice its directors were willing to make.

By the way, if you’re wondering whether or not there’s going to be an intermission to split the movie’s monstrous runtime in half, the answer is most likely no. Anthony Russo said not a single person got up during the first three Endgame audience screenings, which probably means it’s just too good to risk even one bathroom break.

But hey, we’re not complaining. We’ve waited a decade, so sitting down for three hours is a walk in the park.

Avengers: Endgame will begin breaking more records nationwide on April 26.
