Game of Thrones season 8: Check out behind the scenes teasers

From stunts to prosthetics, Game of Thrones season 8 will ramp things up further. Watch these two videos, and think of what season 8 will bring.

Props to HBO on this one. Both of the videos its released showing some of the detail that goes into the more fantastical bits of Game of Thrones very carefully don’t make many references to season 8.

There’s one exception, of course, and we’ll get to it. Still, most of this footage is from seasons past, reflecting just how the work has gotten more and more detailed.

We’ll start with the more recent of the two videos, which talks about stunts. More specifically, it reveals the answer to a question that you may have had: how does the show set so many people on fire?

Who knew that the answer was as simple as layering? It’s more than just the thing you do every fall and winter to stave off the cold. Granted, the layers that keep the stunt performers safe are more than just your basic layers.

Note that the stunt coordinator, Rowley Irlam, only has the most general things to say about how many people will get set on fire come season 8. Reading between the lines, though, it seems like the show might beat its own record this season.

Meanwhile, the other video focuses on effects makeup, specifically the prosthetics. Check out the Night King coming to life:

If you listen carefully, you’ll hear Barrie Gower mention that there are even more people being put in prosthetics this season than ever before; he explicitly says “70-80,” then notes that that exceeds what was done in “Hardhome.” With episode 3 acting as a massive battle scene, that’s really not a surprise, especially if some of the defenders of Winterfell rise again to join the other side of the battle.

Additionally, there’s a significant focus on the undead, although we get brief glimpses of the characters who already have prominent facial scars in Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister. In other words, there aren’t any hints that anyone else will be getting changing scars, but it’s still a pretty pointed choice to make when those scars are a little less glamorous or eye-catching than the creation of the wights.

Don’t read too deeply into it, but we’re making a note of it.
