True or false? Harry Potter’s scar is not a lightning bolt but the killing curse

facebooktwitterreddit

The famous lightning bolt scar might not be a lightning bolt according to some Harry Potter fans. What do you think?

There is a suggestion going around right now that the lightning bolt scar on Harry Potter’s head is not a lighting bolt. It is being suggested that the famous scar is actually the wand movement of the killing curse Lord Voldemort used on baby Harry Potter, Avada Kedavra.

Thing is, while your initial gut is to yell; “No! It’s now!” When you see the evidence, you do actually start scratching your head in wonder at whether this is one of those tidbits that J.K. Rowling did on purpose, but never told us.

More from Harry Potter

It wouldn’t be the first time Rowling has done something like this. She is, after all, the queen of the long game. We’ve seen this throughout the entire franchise of Harry Potter as something in book one would not be explained until book seven.

We’ve seen it even more recently with learning Rowling had revealed the ending to Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald before the Fantastic Beasts franchise was even launched. And there is probably so much more about the Wizarding World that we do not know that Rowling is keeping secret. Leaving little clues here and there for us to figure out ourselves.

The point being, don’t go off your gut reaction. Anything is possible when it comes to the Wizarding World.

Anyway, the debate popped up thanks to one Potterhead who put up on social media about the lighting bolt scar not being a lighting bolt but the hand movement of Avada Kedavra. Along with the tweet was a side by side shot of Harry’s scar and the Wiki Page of Avada Kedavra showing the wand movement.

And they are identical. They’re mirror images of one another, but definitely identical. There are, however, issues to this potential Harry Potter fact.

For example, if this was true, why has it never been mentioned before? It is not mentioned once in any of the books, movies, or any other Harry Potter piece merch. At least not to my knowledge anyway. If you happen to find something that does point this out then please share.

Other questions raised are, why does no other spell do this? Why has it not showed up on any other victim of the killing curse? Why is the scar so small compared to the hand movement? All of these questions can be easily answered however.

Let’s take the first question. Why has it never been mentioned in Harry Potter? Well, J.K. Rowling may have wanted to keep this little tidbit quiet for herself. Not everything needs an explanation after all.

Other answers to the some of the questions are. This phenomenon only happen with the killing curse. The scar may only show up on those who survive the killing curse. etc, etc.

Thing is, while there are answers to the questions, none of them provide confirmation or denial of the potential fact that the scar on Harry’s head is the hand movement of Avada Kedavra.
