Never mind the normal awards show looks at this year’s Golden Globes. We’re here for the weird, the intriguing, and the downright unexpected.

We could simply put the best-dressed stars of this year’s Golden Globes here for you to peruse at your leisure. There certainly were a lot of well-dressed celebrities (hello, the cast of Black Panther, who will probably kill it for the rest of awards season), and some of the 11 stars below would probably make it onto that list as well.

But these 11 have something else in common. Something about their look caught your attention, not because it was necessarily pretty, but because it had a certain je ne sais quoi about it. In a word, it was unexpected.

Let’s dive right in.

Lady Gaga

In some ways, Lady Gaga’s looks are always expected in that they’re usually unexpected somehow; this is really unexpected in the sense that her hair actually matches. Granted, it looks like she had someone hastily spraying her hair instead of having it fully dyed to match, but the effect is hard to deny.

Also, you could hide a lot of things in those poofy sleeves.

Billy Porter

There are always capes and trains on any awards show red carpet, but few are quite as dramatic and simply wowing as Billy Porter’s look. Although he didn’t win the Golden Globe he was nominated for, we’ll give him an award for both Best Cape and Best Shoes. Those loafers are everything.

Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer

The contrast in looks between these two go beyond just that Sandra Oh is wearing white and Jodie Comer is wearing black. Oh has a dose of old Hollywood glamour about her, from the hairstyle to the simple-but-devastating white gown; Comer, meanwhile, is somewhat more modern in her gown’s detailing. But together, they look fantastic. Get yourself a co-star who looks at you like that.

Michelle Yeoh

Michelle Yeoh graced the red carpet with her presence, wearing all-green to match her emerald ring — the same one from Crazy Rich Asians, because it’s hers — but this look is unexpected because of the materials used. There was a lot of lace and tulle happening on last night’s red carpet, but not much in the way of leather-looking materials. The combination works well on her.

Jamie Lee Curtis

Somehow, Jamie Lee Curtis looks like an extremely relatable grandma, the kind that slips you money to go shopping or just takes you shopping herself, but also like a fantastic movie star and a legend in her own right. This is perhaps most unexpected because of how white her hair has gotten. Props to her for owning it and even emphasizing it with her white-and-silver ensemble, down to the white clutch.
