Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ended in such a way that we have a lot of questions. Which have inevitably turned into theories; and Credence Barebone being Dumbledore’s son is the latest one.

Just before we get things started. If you haven’t seen Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald yet you might want to avoid this post. It will contain spoilers about the latest Wizarding World movie as we delve into the details about how Credence could be Dumbeldore’s son.

Ok, so we all know what happened at the end of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Credence was revealed to be the long lost brother of Albus Dumbledore, Aurelius Dumbledore. A huge twist to what we all thought was going to happen, Credence revealed as a member of the Lestrange family.

More from Harry Potter

It’s safe to it was a shock to the system learning this fact. And one that made us scratch our heads and grab our Harry Potter books anxiously searching for any reference to a so-called Aurelius Dumbledore. There isn’t one by the way, I checked, a lot.

The problem with this new piece of Wizarding World trivia is the timeline just does add up. On inspection of the events that occurred in the Dumbledore family. Both of Dumbeldore’s parents were dead by the time Credence was born. So how can he be the brother of Dumbledore?

Well, if it does turn out to be true. I am sure J.K. Rowling will have some reason that will completely blow our minds and have us all going; “Oh, wow! I did not see that coming. That is amazing!”

However, until that moment arrives, it’s up to us to theorize the heck out of this one. And one theory that has emerged is Credence, or Aurelius, is actually Dumbledore’s son rather than his brother.

It’s not a perfect theory, and it certainly leaves a few issues, but it is a theory that is seriously interesting and fixes a bunch of problems. Including, the timeline. So here is how it works.

Credence is Dumbledore’s son

So let’s begin with the issue of the timeline, which has caused the most issues for fans. Credence being Dumbledore’s brother just doesn’t fit into the timeline. However, Credence being Dumbledore’s son in Fantastic Beasts does fit into the timeline.

Assuming the year of Credence’s birth is correct, which can be seen via the official birth certificate prop by MinaLima for the Fantastic Beasts movie, Dumbledore would have certainly been old enough to father a child.

But, as we all know, Dumbledore is gay. He and Grindelwald were together romantically. So why would he father a child?

Well, there could a lot of reasons for this. Maybe Dumbledore was bi-sexual rather than gay? Perhaps he and Grindelwald had a fight and Dumbledore sought comfort in someone else and it just so happened to be a woman rather than a man?

With the time period Fantastic Beasts is set in, Dumbledore could have been trying to hide his sexuality. It was not uncommon for gay men to marry and have children in order to keep up appearances.

There is always the possibility Dumbledore wanted a child of his own and whoever the mother is was nothing more than surrogate rather than a lover. The idea of Dumbledore having a secret son is actually more plausible than a secret brother when you start to look at all of the possibilities.

However, from the events that take place in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Dumbledore doesn’t seem to know who Credence is. Which suggests Dumbledore actually doesn’t know he has a child. So how would that have played out?

Again, there is actually quite a lot of possibilities to this idea. The mother may have never have told Dumbledore. She could have, after learning she was pregnant, fled the country for one reason or another. Maybe giving Dumbledore some valid reason to why she left and not to follow. This would easily explain why Dumbledore did not know anything.

Then there is the of Grindelwald having a hand in keeping Credence secret. Considering Grindelwald knew all too well about the existence of Credence and Dumbledore did not. Perhaps he had a hand in hiding him? Perhaps he was jealous that Dumbledore had fathered a child so took steps to whisk her both mother and child away.

Who knows.

This is actually a brilliant theory because it opens up so many possibilities to what lies ahead for us in the future. The good thing is, we will get answers fairly soon as J.K. Rowling revealed answers will be giving in Fantastic Beasts 3 and we will also be exploring Dumbledore’s family at the beginning of the next movie as well.
