Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald has left us with a lot of questions. One major question being, how is Credence Barebone still alive? Thankfully, there is already an answer to this one.

Before Fantastic Beasts: The Crime of Grindelwald arrived in theatres we already knew that Credence Barebone would be back. Ezra Miller’s character was already confirmed, and seen in many promotional images and trailers, despite being killed off in the last movie. Or so it seemed. Leaving us all asking, how is Credence Barebone still alive in Fantastic Beasts?

Thankfully, we already have an answer to this question. And it actually makes perfect sense and clears up the matter perfectly.

Thanks to Digital Spy, who delved into the in’s and out’s of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald: Movie Magic. The answer to the question is given in the companionship book, clear as day.

"You could with justice have believed that Credence had been killed at the end of the first film. But, in fact, as Newt knows, you can’t kill an Obscurial when they’re in their Obscurus form. You can shatter the Obscurus temporarily, but the person hasn’t died."

So there we go. A very simple answer and one that makes complete sense. In fact, if you go back and watch Fantastastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and fast forward to the moment where Credence supposedly “died.” You can actually see Credence flying away in his Obscurus form while everyone else is focused on the capture of Gellert Grindelwald.
