Gina Gershon dives into the tension between FP and Gladys on Riverdale

On Riverdale’s mid-season finale we finally got to meet Jughead’s mom, Gladys. And while the reunion of mother and son made us smile, FP showing up has us asking what’s next?

The mid-season finale of Riverdale arrived with a bang, and went out just the same. But perhaps the best part of the episode came from finally meeting Jellybean and Gladys Jones, the sister and mother of our favorite Jughead.

And while we didn’t see a lot of the female half of the Jones family (in comparison to other characters), we certainly saw enough to know that there are some serious tensions between FP and the women in his family. In fact, it’s the kind of tension we think Riverdale is going to want to explore down the line, especially after that massive cliffhanger that left FP and Jughead unable to get back into town.

According to Entertainment Weekly, we may just get what we want, more of Gladys and Jellybean. While speaking to Gina Gershon, who is playing Gladys on the series, the actress shared with EW her own thoughts on what comes next and why she thinks there may still be something between her character and FP.

Gershon said that she thinks Gladys is “still probably in love with him,” which makes sense as he is the father of her children, and her former (maybe) husband. Plus, with the way they connected when FP arrived to pick up Jughead, we have to think that the elder Jones male is just as affected as Gladys. From the look on his face, to the way they hugged each other, we can totally see them still being in love in some way.

And, as Gershon points out, the reason there is so much tension stems from the idea that “they definitely have a thing. He’s been off doing his thing, so I’m sure she’s not happy about that, but there’s a lot of love there.”

Beyond her relationship with FP, Gladys is a mom, not only to Jughead and Jellybean, but also to the other kids we saw at the chop shop she runs. And during this episode, we watched as her protective instincts came out and she dealt with Penny (who not only scarred Jughead, but also came after him and Archie).

Seeing Gladys’ motherly instincts kick in makes us think that she may not be off camera for long, with all the trouble Riverdale is dealing with and her son and former husband in the midst of it. While Gershon may not know what is next for her character, or at least wasn’t sharing at the time, it is clear that there is a lot more to her story.

As Gershon explained, “Gladys is someone who will do whatever it takes to survive and protect these kids around her.”

At the same time, we would not be surprised if Gladys shows up for more than just her son, but also FP. Considering their relationship and the fact that they have plenty of history, we bet we will see more of Gladys… which will definitely be interesting, especially now that FP and Alice seem to be a thing again.
