The O.C. -“The Best Chrismukkah Ever”
Fear not, celebrators of both Christmas and Hanukkah! No longer will you have to choose between which holiday gets more attention, because you can just celebrate Chrismukkah instead! At least that’s what Seth Cohen and his family do on The O.C. in the teen drama’s legendary season one episode, “The Best Chrismukkah Ever” when we’re first introduced to the mashup holiday.
Seth introduces Ryan to his bi-religious holiday Chrismukkah, which he created so that he can celebrate both holidays that his parents grew up with; his mother Kristin is Catholic, and his father Sandy is Jewish, so why not get the best of both worlds instead of choosing just one? Speaking of choosing just one, nerdy Seth has somehow managed to land two seriously beautiful girls — Summer and Anna — and has managed to play both of them to where he has them right where he wants them.
Both Anna and Summer go to the big Christmas party as Seth’s separate dates, and they both have very special gifts for him: Anna gives him a comic she made specially for him, and Summer reveals that she’s dressed like Wonder Woman under her party dress. It’s like nerd heaven! Both Anna and Summer realize how awkward it is for the three of them whenever they run into each other, so when Anna walks in to the room while Summer is dressed like Wonder Woman, they realize how stupid they’re being trying to win over Seth and tell him to pick one of them.
The next day, Seth tells them he just wants to be friends with both of them, but neither accept that answer and give him back the gifts he gave them.
But it wouldn’t be Newport without a little more drama than that! Marissa is depressed over all her family drama, and gets in trouble for shoplifting while she’s out with Ryan. She steals a watch that Ryan was interested in, and they’re stopped by a security guard on their way out of the store. Later in the night, Marissa gets mad at Ryan for suggesting she goes to therapy, so she sneaks a bottle of vodka from the party, gets wasted, and ends up crashing her car trying to leave before Ryan gets in and drives her home.
They’re stopped by the police on their way because of the taillight Marissa broke, and the police officer wants Marissa to get out of the car but gets called away and leaves them with a warning. As Seth said, it’s a Chrismukkah miracle!
