Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Is Naomi Bunch ever going to learn?
You’d think after years with Rebecca as her daughter that Naomi Bunch would learn but we saw in this week’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend that that is definitely not the case.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend seemingly wrapped up the storyline between Rebecca and her mother nicely until Naomi Bunch was… well… Naomi Bunch about it. In this week’s episode, Rebecca has to go home to New York to see her mother.
While there, she dreads coming clean about everything going on in her life and Naomi, surprisingly, is fine with all the news about what has happened with Rebecca except the fact that she’s not a lawyer anymore.
It was always Naomi’s dream, not Rebecca’s, but that doesn’t stop the fact that Naomi can’t recognize that Rebecca is miserable when she’s working at the law firm. Even now, doing work with the inmates, she’s the happiest she’s ever been because she has her pretzel shop and is working to actually help people.
What’s terrible about this episode is that it makes it seem as if Naomi has changed. She clearly loves her daughter but she doesn’t know how to support Rebecca unless it is what she wants for Rebecca’s future. If Rebecca got to do what she wanted with her life, she’d probably have been a performer of some kind. But Naomi stopped that, forcing her into law school and constantly looking over her to make sure she was living the life that Naomi wanted for her.
Now that Rebecca is finding her own happiness away from her mother, Naomi still hasn’t learned that Rebecca isn’t meant to fit into this version of Naomi’s ideal future for her daughter. No matter how hard Rebecca tries to do what her mother needs, she seems to hit a roadblock time and time again because it just doesn’t fit for Rebecca.
Lucky, Rebecca fought against her mother and finally told her what she wanted out of life. She stood up to Naomi and made sure that it was clear that her mother wasn’t allowed to mettle in her life anymore and, if she did, Rebecca would not speak to her. While a drastic approach to have against your own mother, it is clearly necessary because no matter how many times Rebecca told her “no”, Naomi always put her nose where it didn’t belong.
It seemed, by the end, that Naomi understood and was willing to give her daughter the space she needed but then again, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen “growth” in Naomi for it to just go back to the way it was before. Rebecca standing up to her mother is new though so maybe we can see a healthier relationship between mother and daughter as we come to a close on the final season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
We might not even see Naomi again or, if we do, hopefully, she’ll have a better grasp at how to have a relationship with her daughter.
