Captain Marvel trailer: 9 moments we just had to rewatch

facebooktwitterreddit

The second Captain Marvel trailer dropped last night. While we still need several moments to catch our breath, there are several clips we had to rewind and watch a second, or third, time.

We’ve involuntarily cried through both official Captain Marvel trailers now, and we’re not sure how we’re going to make it through the film without sobbing. Emotionally, we’re obviously still unpacking the second Captain Marvel trailer that debuted last night. Apart from Carol Danvers’ powers, the sparse glimpses of her memories on Earth, and the prelude to the Kree-Skrull war, there are several notable scenes in the new teaser.

While some of these clips might not actually make it into the film — seeing as Marvel is notorious for its misdirection to avoid spoilers — we’ve unabashedly rewatched the trailer dozens of times, so we can let you know which moments are worth rewatching and analyzing yourself.

1. When Carol punches a Skrull

The viewers see an old woman on a bus, but we all know that Carol is getting into a full-on brawl with a Skrull who’s masquerading as an older woman.

The most memorable part of this six-second scene is the man in the background at 0:16 because his gaping mouth was basically all of us throughout the entire trailer.

2. The first look at the Kree military base

Carol Danvers is a solider. She might have willingly joined the Air Force, but she was artificially crafting into becoming a half-Kree soldier.

The snippet of this apparent Kree military base already has us excited to see how the film envisions the Kree’s ships and complicated housing situations. After all, we’re still not sure if Hala has been destroyed in the MCU’s timeline. If it has, then we can expect to see a lot of Valerian-esque spaceships-turned-homes (or, in this case, military bases).

3. A Maria Rambeau BFF moment

Right at the first minute mark, we see Carol Danvers toss a “hang loose” to Maria Rambeau. Brie Larson has said Rambeau is to be considered as an equal to Carol Danvers and in many ways is the embodiment of love in the film.

We also see Maria in a photo when Carol is looking at a broken tag with her name on it.

We hope the MCU will expand Maria’s story arch well beyond Captain Marvel, especially since she’s a standalone hero, she has a critical friendship with Carol, and has an important role in raising another prominent superhero: Monica Rambeau.

4. The Earth crash site

The scenes from 1:21 to 1:25 have a lot to dissect. First, there’s a phenomenon that we can only describe as an explosion of light. Then, Carol starts bleeding blue blood, which she looks completely perplexed by, but she’s distracted by two figures approaching her. One is a Skrull, and the other is an ambiguous silhouette.

We can’t confirm, but we think this might be how Carol first gets her Kree powers. This obviously deviates from two of her comic book origin stories, seeing as Yon-Rogg initiated the explosion that fused Mar-Vell’s DNA with Carol’s and the second iteration involved her future form going back in time to ensure Carol was at the center of that explosion. We already know that Carol will have a new origin story on how she becomes part Kree and catapulted into the Captain Marvel moniker, thanks to Captain Marvel screenwriter Nicole Perlman.

However, the light explosion in these trailer clips could be the source of her powers. We can’t tell who the shadowy figure belongs to in these frames, but our guess is it is Mar-Vell. This spontaneous change would also explain why Carol looks so confused when she sees her blood.

Since we’ve already seen the Kree wipe her memory and implicitly experimenting on her in both trailers, this could be their way of weaponizing her and her accidental abilities, as well as potentially stabilizing her Kree-Human DNA.

5. Carol’s helmet

Everyone say thank you to Andy Park, the Director of Visual Development, and the entire visual department for making Carol Danvers’ mohawk helmet look like it jumped out of a comic panel. We shouldn’t be this excited about a helmet, but we definitely are.

6. Ronan’s snippet

At 1:45, Ronan seems to be living in the moment, just contemplating life, while watching some spaceships blow up. Ronan hasn’t had much scene time in either of the trailers, which leads up to believe that he might not be the villain in this film — our favorite overgrown and angry smurf might not even be evil yet.

7. Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos in human form

At 1:46, we see less than a second of Mendelsohn’s portrayal of Talos in the character’s human form. Unlike Talos’ comic book iteration who is one of few Skrulls who can’t shapeshift, this clip confirms that the film’s version is a shapeshifting Skrull.

8. Carol has tears in her eyes

We clearly aren’t qualified or prepared to fight whatever Kree or Skrull hurt her, but we’re ready to lay our life on the line for Carol Danvers. We have some fan theories about why Carol is so emotional in her second trailer, but it’s likely because she’s realizing over time she was brainwashed by the Kree. Slowly unlearning everything you thought you knew is traumatic, but at least we aren’t the only ones tearing up during this trailer.

9. Chewy, we mean Goose’s debut

“For the bazillionth time, [Goose] is a cat,” Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel (2014) #7. Okay, we’re not sure if this orange feline is actually a cat — seeing as Carol has an archetypal cat on Earth. However, we aren’t unconvinced that Goose isn’t actually a pocket dimension and tentacle hoarding species known as a Flerken.

The only thing we did learn from this scene is that Nick Fury is a canon cat lover.
