Jude Law’s Captain Marvel character is revealed, thanks to Funko

Honestly, we thought we knew what iconic Captain Marvel adjacent character Jude Law was going to play in the upcoming MCU film, but apparently, we know nothing.

There are less than 100 days until Captain Marvel comes to theaters, and this might be the most vital calendar event in our lives thus far (sorry, grad school acceptance letter, you just can’t compare to Carol Danvers’ power). Although the MCU has changed Carol’s backstory for her cinematic debut, we still thought we knew the basics of her life and inner circle.

We still don’t have the title of the Avengers 4 movie, or the trailer, or any official confirmation if Flerkens will help defeat Thanos.

However, we do know who Jude Law will be portraying in Captain Marvel: none other than Yon-Rogg.

After we first saw Law in his character’s suit, we have some suspicions, like most people, that he would portray Mar-Vell, the Kree warrior who had a special bond with Carol Danvers. When Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) told Collider in September that she and Law’s character would cause more tension in their Starforce team, we started to doubt the likelihood that we’d see Law play Mar-Vell — at least not the version of Mar-Vell we grew accustomed to in the comics.

Thankfully, Funko’s blog announced some marvelous Funkos are on the horizon, and the company (un)officially confirmed Law’s character in the process.

While none of the Funkos have Yon-Rogg’s name listed on the packaging or supplementary promotional material as of this writing, the company has listed a  green-clothed bobblehead as “Star Commander,” and an earlier leak showed Yon-Rogg. We know a notorious Kree military star commander in Captain Marvel lore, and Yon-Rogg has some history with Carol Danvers that make Larson’s slightly ominous comments on their tense relationship more logical.

As a long-time enemy of Carol, Yon-Rogg ignited an explosion that granted Carol her Kree abilities. With Marvel Comics’ latest origin story of Car-Ell, Yon-Rogg has less of an explosive impact on her powers, seeing as his actions in the retcon simply start a chain of events that lead to her transformation.

Conversely, Law could portray Mar-Vell as most fans have previously theorized. After all, Yon-Rogg might not have a cameo in Captain Marvel at all, or another actor — who hasn’t confirmed their character — could play the nefarious Kree Star Commander. Since various media outlets are crediting Jude Law as Mar-Vell and the Captain Marvel IMDB page has him listed as the hero, he could play Carol’s pal instead of her nemesis, like the Funko bobblehead vaguely suggests.

We aren’t sure what version of Yon-Rogg Jude Law might play in Captain Marvel, but we do know that the Star Commander is a villain in all his incarnations. We’re less excited to see what Yon-Rogg will do to Carol in her scenes and flashback sequences because we’re more so looking forward to watching Carol Danvers take him down.
