There were a lot of relationships put to the test last week. But everyone learned how to deal with friends in life that they don’t necessarily like.
Rebecca learned on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend this week that she has a lot of relationships to still work on — mainly how she treats those around her that she doesn’t necessarily care that much about. The problem with Heather and Valencia moving and Paula focusing on her law school exams is that Rebecca doesn’t really have anyone to hang out with.
So when she finds a new restaurant she wants to go to, she texts the group and Darryl is the only one who responds to her. Rather than telling Darryl up front that she doesn’t want to go, Rebecca selfishly says fine and goes with Darryl in a car for an extended period of time, despite Rebecca not really seeing him as a friend.
While it is a trend throughout the entire episode, it is important to note that these characters are willing to put their hatred (or rather dislike) of one another to the side for food, a ride, or a desk. If anything, it shows how selfish Paula, Nathaniel, and Rebecca can be. Paula hires Josh to help her get a desk and basically keeps him hostage because she doesn’t want to go home to study. Nathaniel uses Heather to drive him to the beach because he didn’t charge his car. The best part? Neither Nathaniel nor Paula as Heather or Josh what they need.
In fact, Josh is almost late to his next gig because of Paula’s insistence that they stay at the house a little longer. Heather is supposed to be working but goes out of her way to make sure Nathaniel gets to his destination because he’s a good person. Darryl, who listens to Rebecca’s insane wishes about talking in her car, gets attacked when he brings up her mental health to the hostess.
In Rebecca’s defense, it was an invasion of her privacy but Darryl was only bringing it up to share how proud he was of her. The thing is, Paula, Rebecca, and Nathaniel are three people who see any slight on them as an attack. Heather decides not to take Nathaniel to Santa Monica and all she wants to know is what is in the envelope he’s clutching, and thus he lashes out.
For Paula, she won’t tell Josh what is going on with her but she will psychoanalyze him on the car ride and give her two sense. Rebecca just wants to “escape” for the day and basically makes Darryl not ask about her life and then insults him when he shows that he cares for her.
So, at the end of the day, these three groups are just working towards their friendships with one another and, throughout the process, realize that they can trust one another.
