Superstore review: Amy’s ‘Meet The Parents’ moment

On this week’s Superstore, a new initiative at Cloud 9 brings some uncomfortable truths to light for Jonah.

Amy met Jonah’s parents on this week’s episode of Superstore and it went about as awkward as you’d expect. Well, we doubt you expected to find out that Jonah’s been lying to his parents for three years telling them he’s going to medical school when he’s actually working at a big box department store, but then again, this is Superstore we’re talking about. You should expect anything.

Amy spent most of the episode unknowingly bonding with her boyfriend’s family, trying out different mattresses and being touched inappropriately before Jonah was caught helping a customer decide which drill shaft to purchase.

The two were able to sell the lie for quite a while — Amy took advantage of having Jonah’s parents around by squeezing some embarrassing childhood stories out of them and she got to chuck a yam at Glenn’s face — but eventually, Jonah came clean.

For most of the episode, it seemed a bit ridiculous, Jonah’s fear of disappointing his parents.

He’s a grown man after all and if business school wasn’t something he felt passionate about, why would it be embarrassing to put in some hard work while trying to figure your life out?

But then we saw how his mom and dad reacted to the news that their precious boy isn’t going to be a doctor and it all made sense.

Amy tried to smooth things over with the ‘rents before they left and, in doing so, revealed that not only is Jonah not a medical student, he’s also not dating actress Natalie Portman, another lie he kept going for three years. We’re not sure who his mom’s been emailing all this time but it was nice to see Jonah come clean about everything and the two admit their relationship to the entire store by episode’s end.

Of course, everyone already knew they were hooking up so the reveal was a bit anti-climactic. While Amy and Jonah managed that situation, Dina and Garrett were stuck in a pickle of their own.

The two took the new store initiative of being friendlier to customers to the extreme, placing a bet on who could hold a smile the longest while interacting with annoying shoppers. Things got nasty fast, first with Garrett having to present a happy face to customers sharing some devastating personal news with him, then with Dina tracking down his ex-girlfriend and paying her to say he had a son he never knew about.

Garrett hit back by reminding Dina her birds would die soon and then bringing up the traumatic experience of Dina’s dad abandoning her at a gas station before the two called a truce. Again, the sexual tension between these two is thick and we need more of these interactions to keep us going when things get rough for Amy and Jonah like they did this episode.
