Star Wars Resistance: Is the pirate Synara San a wild card?

Kaz helps rescue a survivor and brings her back to the Colossus. What he doesn’t realize is she’s pirate and now the entire station in serious trouble.

Rewinding things back to “The Triple Dark,” we discovered the pirates are in league with the First Order. Major Vonreg and Commander Pyre had suggested to Captain Phasma that they seek out the pirates and use them in their plans to acquire the Colossus. Standing beside pirate leader Kragan Gorr during their last transmission with the First Order is his second-in-command, Synara San.

Synara being a pirate leader’s right-hand person could mean several things.

First, she must have proven herself to be a formidable and cunning person. For someone to hold that title, they have to be good at strategizing and thinking outside the box. We saw that in “Signal from Sector Six,” when she hid herself in the crate to protect herself from the Kowakian monkey-ape. Granted, she could have died due to the lack of oxygen, but she thought quickly on her feet.

Second, she must have committed morally questionable acts. Even though these are space pirates, they still pillage and plunder for their own gain. As we saw with the frigate in this episode, the pirate raid was brutal. They’re the type to shoot first and don’t bother asking questions. Also, when they all attacked the Colossus earlier in the season, she was committed to it destroying it and possibly killing innocent lives in the process.

And third, she could have earned that rank because of her unquestionable loyalty. When it comes to second-in-commands, pirate leaders without a doubt pick an individual they can rely on. Synara must have demonstrated time and time again how she’s worthy of Kragan’s trust. He clearly confides in her and relies on her to carry out his orders.

Not all pirates can be painted with the same brush, however. Hondo Ohnaka is a prime example of someone who primarily thinks of himself, but he also has the ability to care for others. Will we see Synara go down a similar path? Or is the goal to take the Colossus for the First Order the only thing she cares about?

At the end of this latest episode, Kragan tells her to blend in. When someone is asked to do that, though, they start to get to know the people and the way of life. Kaz also has a sweet and boyish quality about him that makes him charming and lovable. Would spending time with him have a positive effect on her?

It would make things even more interesting if she starts feeling conflicted about the mission she’s been tasked. Will she continue to feed the pirates information from the inside? Or will she start to feel at home and more accepted by Kaz and his friends?

In our opinion, Synara is a wild card. We don’t know whether she’s going to be a full-out enemy with no remorse or someone capable of changing alliances. If the former, Kaz is going to feel personally responsible about what’s to come. He’ll also have to reconsider how much trust he should place in strangers. If the latter, Kaz would gain a new friend and gain more of an insight about the relationship between the pirates and the First Order.
