Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: 3 questions for the holiday special

With “A Midwinter’s Tale” set to bridge the gap between the first two seasons of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, it’s time to ask some questions.

Did you think that Chilling Adventures of Sabrina would wait for another year before giving us more from the world of Greendale? We certainly did, only to be surprised this morning by Netflix’s announcement that come Dec. 14, there will be a holiday special: “A Midwinter’s Tale.”

It’s pointedly described as a “standalone episode,” so we expect it’ll tease some of what’s to come in the already-filming season 2 as well as getting an opportunity to show off more of the Spellmans, the Church of Night, and more.

But with the teaser photo and announcement now here, we have plenty of questions. Let’s dive in. Warning: there will be some slight spoilers for season 1 below.

What sort of witch traditions will we see?

Since the winter solstice is quite literally the longest night of the year, we expect that the Church of Night will have something special in mind. Presumably, it’s not more cannibalism — the Feast of Feasts has that covered — but it could be some other ritual such as staying up through the night, using the long night to work powerful spells, or even using it as the gift-giving time instead of Christmas, since the Church of Night almost certainly has some issues with the religious connotations of such a holiday.

Will the humans factor in at all?

Even though it’s a standalone, “A Midwinter’s Tale” appears to follow the events of season 1, because the teaser image has Sabrina sporting her platinum hair. She doesn’t have that hair color until the very last episode of season 1.

As a result, the likelihood of Roz, Susie, or Harvey might seem low at first glance, but check out the CAOS Twitter account. It’s retweeted something that mentions Harvey explicitly, with Roz and Susie implicitly making an appearance as well. It’s not confirmation by any stretch of the word, but it is certainly quite intriguing. Besides, they’re major parts of the cast. Who wouldn’t want to see how they’re all doing after the events of season 1?

With Luke and Ambrose the only real couple right now, will they get some holiday romance?

Even though we expect some gore (or at the very least, some magic), if we don’t get more of Ambrose and Luke’s budding romance, we riot. We don’t care if it’s them trying to figure out what to get each other, only to get the same thing, or if they just do something silly for the holidays; it just seems like an obvious addition to the episode.

Although CAOS certainly had some surprises up its sleeve for the first season, we’re hoping that leaving Ambrose and Luke out of the picture to give more screen time to other members of the main cast isn’t one of them. Just let them have a happy solstice, CAOS. Please?
