Infinity War is the only movie Disney isn’t pushing to get Best Picture at the Oscars

Disney’s now campaigning for Avengers: Infinity War to get a few high-profile Oscar awards after a big push to also get Black Panther Oscars recognition.

Repeat after me: Disney is not playing around this Oscars season. If you head to its For Your Consideration website right now, you’ll see there are five films they’re putting big money on: Black Panther, Incredibles 2Ralph Breaks the InternetMary Poppins Returns, and Avengers: Infinity War

Now that the superhero genre has well exceeded other’s expectations, it’s only fair that Disney makes the push to get these movies the film recognition it deserves. Black Panther was one of the first films to spring up for Disney, which included a hopeful consideration for Best Picture. Maybe a decade ago, we would have found it odd to campaign to get a comic book movie an Academy Award, but for a movie like Black Panther, you have to look past its genre and at its merit as a whole.

Now, it seems like that idea is applying to Avengers: Infinity War as well. Currently, Disney is hopeful that the Marvel movie can make it into 11 categories total (IGN reports there was originally only one category), though it’s still less than the 16 categories they’ve chosen for Black Panther.

The highest category Disney is hopeful to have one of Infinity War’s own take home is Best Director. That would go to both Joe and Anthony Russo, who co-directed the film together. If things were to work out in Disney’s favor, then that would put them directly against Ryan Coogler for Black Panther. Though, the company’s pushing for all five of its films to take home Best Director, and we’re pretty sure the Academy won’t let Disney nominate the entire category.

One thing Disney doesn’t have this movie down for is Best Picture. It’s a lofty goal, so they made the best decision to leave it at Best Adapted Screenplay instead. Oddly enough, out of the five films, it’s the only one the company doesn’t have marked down for Best Picture.

Maybe Disney does recognize that a movie like Infinity War isn’t totally worth Best Picture. But I don’t see how they could include something like Wreck-It Ralph 2 and Incredibles 2 for that category. There’s likely to be some stiff competition, but it looks like Disney’s trying not to put all its eggs in one basket. In all honesty, Black Panther is the best choice to campaign for this nomination… and maybe Mary Poppins Returns (though we’ll have to wait and see until that comes out).
