Jude Law teases possible Captain Marvel twist we weren’t expecting
We all assumed Jude Law was playing Mar-Vell in the new Captain Marvel movie. But in a new interview, Law casts doubt on this theory.
Captain Marvel, the first Marvel film to feature a female superhero in the title role, is one of the most highly anticipated films of 2019.
And while audiences are ready to watch Brie Larson power up and fight galactic invaders, costar Jude Law let slip last night that his role in the film might not be what viewers were expecting.
Law was presumed to be playing Mar-Vell, a cosmic champion for Earth who unintentionally shared his powers with Larson’s Captain Marvel. But in a recent interview with Stephen Colbert, Law cast doubt on the identity of his Marvel character.
“I thought you were Mar-Vell,” Colbert asked Law, “you’re not Mar-Vell?” To which Law responded, looking quite coy, “I can’t tell you who I am.”
“But you’re not Mar-Vell or you are Mar-Vell?” Colbert pushed. Still, Law didn’t budge.
“I can’t tell you who I am. Nice try,” the actor, who is also playing young Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel, said.
To justify his unwillingness to spill, Law explained how seriously Marvel takes their cinematic secrets. “In Marvel,” he said, laughing, “it’s like DON’T YOU (bleep) EVER TELL ANYBODY ABOUT THIS!”
When it comes to the company’s non-disclosure rules, Law simply shared they are “scary.”
The true identity of Law’s character could have a major impact on the film’s plot and determine his role alongside Larson’s Captain Marvel. If he is Mar-Vell, he will actually be playing the original Captain Marvel, a Kree warrior sent to earth by one Colonel Yon-Rogg. After Yon-Rogg goes full villain against earth, Mar-Vell is the good guy who protects the people. In the process, he saves a woman named Carol Danvers, to whom he accidentally transfers powers. It is Danvers (who assumes the name of Ms. Marvel before moving on to Captain after Mar-Vell dies from cancer) that is the star of MCU’s 2019 film.
Thus if Law is Mar-Vell, he’s most likely on Larson’s side.
But if he’s not, the next best guess for his identity is none other than Yon-Rogg, the villainous Kree military commander, which would mean something completely different for his performance and for his relationship with Larson’s Captain Marvel.
And though Law didn’t confirm or deny anything, his silence leads us to believe that his role in Marvel’s next blockbuster will be much more than we originally thought.
Captain Marvel will hit theaters March 8, 2019.
