Fans of Dumbledore can look forward to Jude Law bringing a unique approach to the character in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts 2 film.

Many Harry Potter fans have grown up knowing the character of Albus Dumbledore. He has already had a couple of different versions, the original book version of Dumbledore as well as the interpretation in the Harry Potter films. And now, fans can expect to see another version of the famous character, this time a younger Dumbledore played by Jude Law in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

The film is going to take place 70 years before the Harry Potter books, and it will feature Dumbledore as he helps Newt Scamander get ready to face a fight with Grindelwald.

On the Today Show, Law talked about the books and playing Dumbledore. He said that he is a fan of the series and is familiar with the character. But, he also got notes and extra information from J.K. Rowling about Dumbledore which he says, “filled in a lot more gaps.”

Law also talked about reading the Harry Potter books to his children as they were growing up. He said that his whole household was really into the series: “they loved it, and I loved it.”

Fans can expect Law to have his own take on the character, especially considering that he is playing a younger and less-experienced Dumbledore.

“It was kind of a unique experience. It’s not often you get to play a character who’s already been portrayed in his old age. They gave me carte blanche to start again.”

Law said that being able to create his own approach to the character and to explore a part of Dumbledore’s life that hasn’t been looked at before appealed to him.

“I didn’t feel like I had to recreate him, I felt like I could go back and layer him up and look at the inner turmoil, the dramas that were going on in the man before he becomes more serene, more resolved. So you’re seeing the drama of his inner workings unfold.”

Messages from those involved in the film have been conflicting on the topic of how they will address Dumbledore’s sexuality, so fans might just have to wait to watch the film to see how that topic is handled.
