Harry Potter producer David Heyman is going to be the man behind the Willy Wonka prequel. And yes, it’s going to be a prequel.

Potterheads will know David Heyman as the producer for all eight Harry Potter movies and the Fantastic Beasts prequels. He’s also tackled the Paddington reboot movies and is now turning his attention to the Willy Wonka prequel.

And yes, it’s definitely going to be a prequel.

More from Harry Potter

Talks of another Willy Wonka movie have taken place over the last two years. The rumors initially were about a sequel, but now it turns out that the movie will go further back in time, this time touching on what made Mr. Wonka the man he was in the original movie.

Heyman will certainly have experience in tackling prequel movies, with the Fantastic Beasts franchise under his belt. He’ll know what works and what doesn’t; telling a tale about known characters without being obvious and adding drama into a partially known tale.

More importantly, fans of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie will get a chance to find out why Mr. Wonka locked himself in his factory with only the Umpa Lumpas for company. While we got some elements of that tale, the full story was never told and now is our chance to go through the whole tale. The remake movie with Johnny Depp and by Tim Burton certainly add a little context with the terrifying dentist father, but not enough to flesh out the full tale.

Think of it a little like Wicked, the stage production that shows how the characters of Oz became who and what they were in Wizard of Oz. That tale mostly focused on the Wicked Witch of the West and this tale will focus on Willy Wonka.

There’s another Fantastic Beasts connection to this Willy Wonka prequel tale. Ezra Miller is one of the top contenders for the role of the candy maker, according to Joblo.
