5 Clueless throwbacks that need to happen in the remake

As if! A Clueless remake is in the works, and ’90s kids are in for a whole new take on the classic tale of Cher and her friends. But there are some things we want to see from a remake.

According to a report from Deadline, there is a remake of Clueless in the early stages of development from Paramount. There are very little details known about the new film, as it is still in the beginning stages of being developed, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of things we hope to see out of a new Clueless movie.

As a cult classic for generation X, this is a movie that many of us love and remember fondly. From Cher’s rather sad driving skills, to Paul Rudd’s fun and funny step-brother meets protector role, there are plenty of moments we loved in the original. And while we don’t know how the remake will honor the original, we have five throwbacks we feel need to happen to make the new movie live up to the classic.

Bring back Paul Rudd

Speaking of Paul Rudd, we want to see him make a return for the remake. Whether it is in a cameo role, or something bigger, we think Rudd would make an amazing addition to the new Clueless. As Josh in the original, Rudd was not only a disapproving big brother, but also a friend, and so much more. He may not have been the focus of the movie, but he certainly helped give it a lot of heart.

“As if!”

Another thing we want to see is the use of the classic line, “As if!” Even if the remake modernizes the story further (the original was based on the Jane Austen novel Emma), we think it would be amazing to hear the lead actress spouting off “As if,” when things don’t seem to be up to her standards. In fact, we wouldn’t mind if the movie made that two-word phrase popular again (we missed it).

Classic scenes

Cher was at the heart of Clueless, and some of her scenes are so iconic that they are still used memes, let alone references in other ways. And we want to see the remake give us the sad walk down Rodeo Drive, just as much as we want to see the failure of her driving test. In fact, we loved seeing Cher fail her driving test so much (sorry Cher), that we still giggle over that entire scene and have our fingers crossed that the new movie makes it happen again.

Christian

While we loved most of the characters who brought Clueless to life, one that we hope to see get more focus is Christian (originally played by Justin Walker). He was the target of Cher’s plan to get a boyfriend, right up until she learned he was actually gay. We loved that the movie was willing to give us a gay character the first time around, and this time we would love it if his story was a bit more in-depth. He turned out to be a good friend for Cher, and seeing him get a bit more love would definitely make us happy.

Fashionable references

Finally, the fashion of Clueless is iconic in its own way. And while we may not want to see the exact same outfits brought out for the remake, there are a few that definitely deserve to be revisited, even if it is in an updated way. From the red slip dress Cher wore to try to seduce Christian, to the Troll doll shirt that Tai is rocking before the makeover by Cher and Dionne, and even the matching plaid outfits that the girls wore to school, we think these looks deserve a place in the remake.

Honestly, we are hoping that there are other throwbacks to the original that make us nostalgic without taking away from whatever the new movie brings us. Whether it is something as simple as bringing back some of the original cast members for cameos or a few scenes being remade, we hope this new take on the cult classic lives up to the memory of Clueless.

We don’t know if we are excited for a Clueless remake. But we certainly can’t wait to see how they re-imagine the world of Cher and her friends.
