Betrayal is coming in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Someone will join Grindelwald’s army and all bets are on Queenie.

If you thought Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald would be all singing and dancing I’m afraid you couldn’t be further from the truth. Depicted as being the darkest movie of the franchise, you should brace yourself for the worst, and specifically, Queenie joining Grindelwald’s army.

Betrayal has been hinted at for some time by Warner Bros. From both an official press release and reaction by the cast, you can see the signs of what is to come.

Eddie Redmayne eluded to the ending being jaw-dropping and completely unexpected, and the logline Warner Bros. has taken for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is:

"“Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world,”"

However, this doesn’t exactly all point specifically to Queenie. Naturally, the suspects of betrayal have been Newt’s brother Theasus Scamander, or Leta Lestrange. Then, once Nagini was revealed the suspicion of betrayal moved over to her and Credence.

Queenie has only come into the picture very recently, and if it turns out to be correct, then Warner Bros. has done a fantastic job redirecting our suspicions to other characters. As it has only come apparent now when the most recent TV spot of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald featured both Queenie and Grindelwald together.

You can see, around the 16-second mark, Grindelwald standing alone, unarmed, opposite Queenie. Who is armed with her wand pointed directly at him. It should be pointed out that at this point, Queenie has fled with Jacob to Britain as they are forbidden to be together under the magical laws in the US. This has caused tension between her and Tina and has changed Queenie’s life completely.

Her official character description gives more detail:

"Queenie Goldstein is a free-spirited witch who is also a Legilimens—able to read minds—which can sometimes be as much a curse as it is a blessing. Queenie has fallen in love with No-Maj baker Jacob Kowalski, despite the wizarding world laws forbidding the relationship and the painful rift it has caused between her and her sister, Tina. Intent on finding a way for her and Jacob to be together, she has used magic to whisk Jacob, unwittingly, to England, where magical laws are more permissive. However, the ruse backfires, threatening their budding romance and leaving Queenie desperate…and vulnerable."

We know that Grindelwald is not like Voldemort. He is a master manipulator. He also does not want to rid the world of Muggles, but wishes to rule over them. Queenie, a powerful Legilimens, will be able to tell know all of this.

And this is where the betrayal comes in. The idea is Queenie, who wants to be with Jacob, will be able to see that the life Grindlewald is offering will allow it. To her, it will be a better alternative to the life she is living now. Grindelwald himself will know this too and will use it agains’t her.

So she will join Grindelwald’s army, she will make the choice to betray everyone. But we won’t see this until the very end of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and this will be the moment that Eddie Redmayne hinted at, and it will set up the premise for Fantastic Beasts 3.
