Stephen Colbert tries to find the humor in a terrifying day
After yesterday’s string of attempted bombings, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert did its best to find the funny and a bit of outrage, too.
As we move into a third day that involves “suspicious packages” showing up at everywhere from CNN to now, as of this morning, Robert De Niro’s office, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert had a tough job last night. It’s a show that has made its name by commenting on the news; this is, indeed, news of the highest order, because CNN actually had to evacuate while on the air from its New York bureau (a clip that Stephen Colbert actually showed in his opening monologue last night).
But at the same time, The Late Show is also late-night comedy.
So, how do you be funny when something so serious is happening?
Well, Colbert found his answer: some New York City-unique jokes. Watch the clip below:
Of course, Colbert also had a moment to talk about the current administration’s response to these packages, particularly knocking the president’s seeming inability to tweet anything more than a co-sign on the vice president’s tweet. However, even though he managed to smile, there was something perhaps a bit off on last night’s episode. It’s understandable — but the show went on, and Colbert made us laugh for a few minutes. (His bit about the Bronx is particularly good, if only because his impression sounds pretty accurate.)
Meanwhile, as of this morning, CNN has kept reporting. The New York Times followed the president’s ongoing responses to what’s going on, noting “not even reports of explosive devices could do much to halt months of highly divisive messaging at campaign rallies.” BuzzFeed News, linked above, is also updating frequently as things develop.
For some, reading these things may be a comfort, because there’s knowledge to be gleaned. For others, maybe the comfort is taking a step away from the news to do some other form of self-care. If you can, find something to do today that brings you peace, or joy, or maybe a bit of both, because we can all certainly use it these days.
At the end of the day, just take care of yourself.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs weeknights on CBS.
