These five animated films from 2018 are likely to be nominated for an Oscar

Twenty-five films have been submitted to the Academy Awards for the animated film category. Which five are most likely to get nominated?

Next year, the 91st Academy Awards will be held, and there is already buzz about which films will end up grabbing that coveted golden statues. While much of the speculation and talk centers around live-action movies, there’s also a lot of speculating happening today about which animated films will be nominated and which will win the award.

A list of twenty-five films has been submitted to be considered by the Academy for the Animated Feature Film category.

Of course, only five of these will actually end up being nominated, but, the list of the films submitted is definitely worth taking a look at. You can take a look at them in alphabetical order below:

Disney, no surprise, has a couple of films on this list including Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet. But, there are also many submissions that most people haven’t even heard of. Many of the lesser-known films are made by studios outside of the U.S.

According to the Washington Post, there are many films on the list haven’t had their Los Angeles qualifying run which is required. There are multiplied requirements related to theatrical releases that the Academy looks at before they move ahead with voting.

It will still be a few months before we hear who the nominees are, so we can all keep speculation until Jan. 22.

Which films are most likely to be nominated?

It’s rare for a film made by a studio outside of the United States to get a nomination, but we won’t know for sure until January. Other than Studio Ghibli films, there have been very few anime nominations over the years.

The list of which films are most likely to be nominated isn’t necessarily which films are most deserving, so keep that in mind.

Incredibles 2

This one is pretty much a shoe-in. Disney/Pixar films are well-made, and they are loved by fans. It would honestly be shocking if this film didn’t grab a nomination.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

We really hope this film gets a nomination as it looks to be a well-constructed, fun, important film. The attention to detail and varying animation styles, as well as Spidey’s popularity, make this movie likely to grab a nom.

Isle of Dogs

This Wes Anderson film was made by stop-motion-animation and has Anderson’s signature style all over it. With such a big name behind the film and a distinct feel, it will most likely grab one of those spots.

Smallfoot

/Film notes that the Academy has a hard time understanding and voting on animated films. So, the best films might not be chosen. Instead, films that are popular and that kids like sometimes get the nominations over films that are groundbreaking or unique.

Ralph Breaks the Internet

This movie isn’t even out yet, but as another big Disney film, it will likely get the last spot. While the film looks fun and entertaining, not to mention packed full of pop culture references, it’s interesting how two of the spots on this list are sequels. Hey, it’s hard to beat Disney when it comes to animation, sequels or not.

Which film will win the award?

Many film critics and film fanatics are guessing that Incredibles 2 is most likely to get the win. The animated film category has only been around since 2001, yet Disney has won nine times. With films like the first Incredibles, Toy Story 3, and Inside Out winning in the past, Incredibles 2, or possibly Ralph Wrecks the Internet, is the most likely to get the Oscar.
