Superstore preview: The carpool cover-up

This week’s episode of Superstore tackles every parent’s worst nightmare: carpooling.

Amy and Jonah’s secret relationship continues to cause problems for the pair on this week’s episode of Superstore. Just last week, we saw Jonah fumble his attempt to throw his pregnant girlfriend a fake baby-shower.

In “Toxic Workplace,” the two further bungle their personal and professional lives by trying to keep their romance hush-hush, this time committing themselves to that dreaded of all experiences: the carpool. After Dinah discovers the couple drove to work together, Amy is forced to concoct an excuse to avoid suspicion. She goes with the lie of carpooling, explaining the two were trying to save money by riding to work together. Of course, the Cloud 9 employees see this as an opportunity to launch their own weekly carpool and somehow, Cheyenne is put in charge.

While everyone tries to explain carpool karaoke to Dinah, Kelly comes to Glenn with terrible news: she’s transferring stores. Presumably, working with her ex after he’s banged another employee in the store photo room is just too awkward. Glenn, however, can’t bear to think of losing an employee, so he stages an intervention of sorts, a break-room discussion of the store’s current toxic workplace environment.

And yes, it goes off the rails quickly.

Besides this being a chance for the entire store to mock poor Kelly’s squeaky personality, “Toxic Workplace” will probably also serve as another surprisingly teachable moment for the show.

Superstore is at its best when it combines serious issues — gun control, abortion, immigration — with the kind of quirky, slap-stick humor its cast excels at. Kelly may be a peripheral character that doesn’t receive much love from fans, but it’s nice to be reminded that there’s already been one casualty of this Jonah/Amy hook-up and there are likely to be more. I can’t imagine Glenn, Dinah, and a few other employees being thrilled when they find out the pair kept them in the dark about their ongoing romance.

Because this is Superstore, that secret will probably come out sooner rather than later, and we’re guessing the big reveal will happen in the most painfully hilarious way possible.
