Fans are pretty emotional over Ian Gallagher’s final episode on Shameless

Ian Gallagher’s last appearance on Shameless aired on Sunday, and fans are pretty emotional about how his story ended.

On Sunday night, fans already knew that it was going to be Cameron Monaghan’s last episode playing Ian Gallagher. But, the fate of the character and whether or not he would get a happy ending was up in the air.

Luckily, the series did decide to give him a mostly happy ending and to finally let him reunite with Mickey, his old boyfriend. Many fans have been rooting for the couple and were hoping the series would end their story on a positive note. Ultimately, Shameless came through for its fans.

In Sunday’s episode “Face It, You’re Gorgeous,” Ian was sent to prison for his part in blowing up a van as part of a protest against conversion therapy. At the end of the episode, his cellmate was revealed to be Mickey. Mickey was supposed to still be in Mexico. In season 7, when we last saw Mickey, Ian was going to run away with him, but the two ended up going their separate ways.

This is a happier ending for the character than many fans were expecting, and it leaves the future open for speculation. Shameless even put a video together highlighting moments between the two throughout the series. The video is adorable and ends with the two sharing a kiss in their jail cell.

Monaghan shared an Instagram post last week where he talked about leaving the show and what the journey meant to him.

"The next episode will be my last. I have known since last year, but I didn’t want to give it away too early as I wanted this season to be a surprise for the audience, allowing them to experience Ian’s unsure journey with his character. This role has been a joy to inhabit, a wild and special ride, and I’d like to thank #Shameless as well as you, the viewers, for being there with him. Goodbye, Ian Clayton Gallagher. We’ll meet again?"

While many fans are sad to see Ian leaving the show, as he has definitely been a fan favorite over the years, mostly they were just thrilled that the show let his story end on such a good note. Many people were also happy to see Ian and Mickey reunite. That relationship has been cheered on by fans and is a popular ship. Fans of their relationship were thrilled they were finally given some resolution.

We are glad to see Ian and Mickey’s story get some resolution, and for fans to have that as well.
