Supernatural: Lucifer’s vessel in season 14 and what it means for Dean
By Evie Taylor
After the death of Lucifer last season, the season 14 premiere revealed that the devil’s vessel is still alive. Could this reveal be crucial in saving Dean?
The appearance of Nick in the Supernatural season 14 premiere was surprising to say the least. Not only is this the first time the character has interacted with Sam and Dean, having been possessed by Lucifer long before meeting them, but the show has previously declared Nick as dead. Therefore, this interesting reveal could suggest that there is still hope for Dean.
If you’re not sure who Nick is and how he fits into the Supernatural universe, that’s understandable because his character has been under the control of Lucifer since season 5, and we only have a few facts about the character from before that time. What we do know about him is that he had a wife and child who were brutally murdered when a criminal broke into their family home. As archangels need to possess a certain type of human, Lucifer needed Nick specifically when he was released from Hell, using the death of Nick’s family as a driving force to persuade him to agree to being taken over. After Lucifer’s downfall at the end of season 5, Nick disappears until season 12, when it is revealed that his body had been restored to hold Lucifer’s spirit once again. Now that the character is back, what is Nick’s role in this season?
It’s hard to predict where Nick will go from here. With seemingly no family and having not had a normal routine for years, can Nick really go back to living a regular human life? He could possibly help Sam locate Dean, who is still possessed by the archangel Michael. The episode on Thursday revealed that Nick can remember flashes and moments from his time with Lucifer, so maybe he can recall further information on what Michael is planning, depending on how much Lucifer knew before he was killed.
However, I think just the fact Nick is alive is much more important to this story. Showing that the vessel of an archangel can survive when the archangel that was inside of them is dead is vital information that might help Sam get Dean back. Although Nick’s character may not have much action in season 14, he is a symbol of hope for Sam. As someone who has survived many years under the influence of an archangel, Nick’s role is to show that there is still a chance for Dean, and our characters know exactly how to save him; the archangel blade.
Having been stabbed by the archangel blade last season, Lucifer is no more, but Nick only has a small knife wound to show for it. It’s already known that an archangel blade is powerful. However, the capability to save the human vessel being possessed by the angel was an unforeseen benefit. Seeing as it was widely believed that Nick had died a long time ago, you could also interpret that the archangel blade can be used to fully resurrect the life of the vessel.
The significance of this is that Sam now has the knowledge that if he uses the archangel blade on Michael, Dean would most likely survive. Unlike demons, angels cannot be exorcised from the body, so this is a breakthrough. Until now, Sam would have had to figure out a way of allowing Dean to take back control of his own body and eject Michael, so Nick’s appearance has given the team a weapon to fight with and the start of a plan to overthrow the newest villain of the series.
