What is Neeku wearing on his head in Star Wars Resistance?

The series premiere of Star Wars Resistance aired earlier this week, and while we’re eager to learn more about the characters, there’s one in particular we’re still thinking about days later.

In “The Recruit,” Kazuda Xiono is assigned to a remote refueling station on a distant planet. There, he has to grab as much information as he can about the First Order and report back to Poe Dameron with his findings.

Things immediately start to go downhill for him when he meets Neeku Vozo, a green and adorable Nikto character who takes everything quite literally. Because of him, Kaz is labeled the best pilot in the galaxy and is entered into a sky race with one of the star pilots of the Colossus.

There’s no doubt Neeku is a kind soul with the best intentions, but there’s something we immediately picked up when we were first introduced to him. One of the physical details that stood out the most was the mechanical setup he wears on his head.

For all we know, it’s a helmet with headphones and he’s listening to awesome space music. As Star Wars fans, though, we like reading into things and throwing our own theories out there. So when it comes to Neeku, we can’t help but think he’s wearing a cybernetic implant.

We’ve seen other characters in Star Wars with this kind of technology attached to their heads. The first being Lobot in The Empire Strikes Back. Another character introduced with the implant was Tseebo in Star Wars Rebels.

Tseebo worked for the Imperial Information Office on Lothal, where he was equipped with an Imperial cybernetic device designed to suppress his personality and increase his productivity. When he overloaded it with Imperial information, it made him act loopy and irregular. There were also times when he’d spit out information in a robotic way.

That said, we don’t think Neeku’s device was a result of the Empire. Instead, we think he suffered from some sort of sky racing accident. After all, he does wear the symbol of the Fireball racer ship on his sleeve. Was he an ace pilot before becoming a mechanic in Jarek Yeager’s shop? Is he wearing that device because he suffered severe brain damage during an accident?

Regardless of his situation, Neeku deserves all the hugs and needs to be protected at all costs. He’s quickly becoming a fan-favorite character, so any details pertaining to his background will no doubt hit the audience right in the feels.

As for our last thought coming out of the premiere, could Neeku’s device get hacked by the First Order and compromise Kaz’s mission? It’s a farfetched theory, but we have seen the Empire hack astromech droids in the past and turn their programming around to serve their nefarious deeds. Here’s hoping that’s not the case for Neeku down the line.
