A petition that’s quickly reaching its goal wants Marvel to let Tobey Maguire appear in Spider-Man once more, if only for a cameo.
If you missed the sweet voice of Tobey Maguire calling out “pizza time” or “My back!” in the original Spider-Man movies, then you’re not alone. At this point, we know it’s far too late for Tobey Maguire to swing back into action and become Spider-Man if Tom Holland were to resign, but there’s no rule saying he can’t still appear in Spider-Man movies.
The good news is that there’s already a push to get Tobey Maguire back into the Spider-verse, all thanks to a Change.org petition that’s gaining steam.
The petition was started by fan Owen Lee, addressing it directly to Marvel, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts. In defense of the petition, Lee simply writes:
"Think about how cool it would be to get the OG movie Spider-Man to make a cameo in the MCU as a pizza delivery guy. It could also open possibilities to the Spider-Verse in the MCU."
No long reason necessary. And it appears that the less-is-more theory really works. As of this publishing, the petition has well over 41,000 signatures — very close to meeting its 50,000 signature goal. In only a half hour or so, the petition amassed more than a thousand people to back it, and it seems to be growing quicker by the minute.
When the petition does reach its goal, there’s no saying what the next step would be. Ideally, fans could hand a printed-out version of the script and hand deliver it to Kevin Feige, but that’s just lofty dreaming. Plus, Spider-Man: Far From Home is nearly done with filming. While a cameo might not drive a huge wrench in the movie’s plans, things would likely need to be organized very quickly. Luckily for them, the petition is reaching its goal very quickly.
As Screen Rant mentions, it might not be particularly hard for Marvel to get someone like Tobey Maguire to make the cameo, considering they can already pull some big names (*cough* Matt Damon). But the problem isn’t necessarily Marvel having the power to bring in Tobey Maguire; it’s more likely, will Marvel even see the petition in the first place? If so, this will be a sure victory for Marvel and Spider-Man fans. We even think it can help them out in our Fandom 250 to become one of the best fandoms of the year. We totally think it’s possible.
With the petition growing quickly, here’s to hoping that Marvel listens to its fans. And, if they want to throw in Andrew Garfield as well, it’ll be one big Spider-Man party.
