During a preview of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse at New York Comic Con, a major death was revealed to the shock and awe of con-goers.

Warning: A major spoiler for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse awaits below.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will feature not one, not two, but three Spider-Man heroes in its multiverse take on the famed hero of New York City.

At New York Comic Con, fans were treated to the 35 minutes of the film. While some of the footage was still in its rough stages of animation, looking more like a video game from the 1990s than a 2018 movie release, it is safe to say this is going to be a Spider-Man film you won’t want to miss.

Especially because as the NYCC audience just learned, there is a major death scene that happens within the first half hour of the movie.

We’ve put a warning above, but once again, don’t read or scroll any further than here if you don’t…

Okay, for those who are still here, let’s get to it.

During the film’s mini preview, Miles Morales goes in search of the strange spider that bit him, hoping to find some answers to his newfound powers.

He comes across a version of Peter Parker, seemingly the Tobey Maguire-played character from Sam Raimi’s trilogy. Parker, suited as Spidey, is fighting off a host of villains. Kingpin is there, his massive henchman, Green Goblin, and another caped villain, possibly Scorpion? Spider-Man (with help from a goof on Green Goblin’s part) manages to foil for a moment Kingpin’s plans to break down barriers between the universe with the use of a massive collider.

Parker tells Kingpin that whatever his plan is, it is not going to work, as he was able to “see” what Kingpin may have been searching for. Kingpin angrily smashes down on Peter Parker, killing our hero.

Soon all of New York City is made aware of Peter Parker’s death, and Mary Jane reads a eulogy in the middle of the city. Miles later visits a funeral in the city, mourning Spider-Man’s loss, only to be visited… by a man in a Spider-Man suit.

This is Peter B. Parker, voiced by Jake Johnson. This version of Parker didn’t make all the best decisions, and even ends up separating from M.J. when the two can’t agree on having kids. He’s alone, eating pizza sadly in his apartment, when a hole in the multiverse sucks him up and out of his world. He lands in Miles’ timeline, and realizes the still fairly innocent and good Peter Parker has been killed.

This likely sets up the story for this grizzled Parker to show Morales the ropes — well, webs in this case.
