The Harry Potter exhibit at the New York Historical Society opens this week. Just what can you expect from the exhibit?

After months of discussion about it, the Harry Potter exhibit is opening at the New York Historical Society. This is a must for all Harry Potter fans, whether you only love the original books and movies or you adore the prequel series, The Cursed Child, and more.

There’s a lot of buzz around the exhibit, which serves as another celebration for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone turning 20 this year. What exactly will you get to see while there and what can you do?

More from Harry Potter

It’s time for Muggles to step into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You’ll be introduced immediately to the beautiful but mysterious castle and the treasure trove housed within. To start, there will be the legends and items that influenced J.K. Rowling in the writing of the novels.

Look out for the original manuscripts and the folklore and magic that brought the story to life. These items and stories aren’t usually revealed, so this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for witches, wizards, and muggles (or no-majs since we’re in New York) alike.

The experience is mostly centered around the Hogwarts subjects, including the Care of Magical Creatures, Charmes, Divination, Potions, and Alchemy, and, of course, Defense Against the Dark Arts. It has everything that the British Harry Potter exhibition had, bringing the whole series from the past and the present to life.

There are also some exclusive items that have been kept under wraps. However, one of the exclusives is the covers from the 20th-anniversary novels created by Brian Selznick and then you’ll want to see the mythical creatures that New York City hosts. This latter part is to tweak the exhibit for the location. If the exhibit moves to other locations, this is likely to happen in each one.

Look out for the beautiful watercolor of snowy owls by John James Audubon. You’ll see the handwritten draft books from the talented author. There’s even a broomstick that lore says belonged to a woman with some magical powers. Of course, the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child costumes are also included.

For those who love the real history behind some of the characters and stories, you’ll want to check out the Ripley Scroll from the 16th century that holds the making of the philosopher’s stones secrets. The 13th- and 14th-century Herbariums are also covered, which focus on plants’ healing powers.

Throughout the exhibit, which runs until Jan. 27, 2019, there will be creative writing classes, hands-on crafts for various ages, and trivia nights. There is going to be something for all.

Tickets for the event cost $21 for adults, $16 for seniors, and $6 for children between five and 16. Children under four are admitted for free.
