Disney really wants Black Panther to snag Best Picture and these other awards at the Oscars
By Mia Johnson
Disney released its list of Academy Award considerations for Marvel Studios’ Black Panther. Among them are Best Picture and Best Director.
Disney isn’t playing around when it comes to showing off Black Panther for awards season. After lots of talk about the movie being thrown into the (now defunct) Popular Film category, many thought the movie should be up for the original Best Picture and nothing less.
Just recently, plans about the movie’s Oscars push were revealed, and now Disney has officially announced its consideration list for the Academy Awards.
At the top of that list is, no doubt, Best Picture. It would be an unprecedented step for the superhero film just to be nominated, let alone win, so Disney’s push might mean change is on the way — especially if Academy voters can warm up to the idea of letting a superhero movie be considered for such a prestigious award.
Disney also seems to be pushing to get most of the cast nominations as well. If Black Panther is able to be nominated for Best Picture, it’s highly likely that Chadwick Boseman will be up for Best Actor, too. However, Black Panther (unfortunately) can’t dominate every acting category, so it’s likely only one or two supporting actors could be chosen for each category. Most likely, this could earn Lupita Nyong’o another Oscar nom, as well as a first-time nomination for Michael B. Jordan.
Here’s just a brief offering of Oscars awards Disney is hoping to grab (you can see the whole list here):

As we talked about previously, director Ryan Coogler should seriously be considered for a Best Director nomination. The director has already had two home-run movies that barely got any Oscars attention (save for a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Creed), so this should be his big opportunity.
Do you think Disney’s efforts to get Black Panther into the Academy Awards will actually get the movie and its actors a nomination? With all this buzz, it would surely be disappointing if Black Panther didn’t get any nominations in the major categories. Audiences and critics alike have shown how much they love the movie, and now it’s time to give it the recognition it deserves.
