Taika Waititi recently met with Marvel for an unknown project
Taika Waititi is meeting with Marvel for a new project, but we don’t know what that project is yet. Of course, we have some ideas.
In an article about the fate of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Hollywood Reporter shared a tiny tidbit of news that some may have missed. They revealed that Taika Waititi, the director of Thor: Ragnarok, had met with Marvel for an unknown project.
After the humor and freshness he was able to bring to Thor in the superhero’s third solo Marvel outing, it makes sense that the studio might want to keep him around. Plus, he would certainly be a good fit to take on the role of director for the third Guardians of the Galaxy film. Of course, there is no confirmation that Taika Waititi will be taking over for James Gunn.
Perhaps the Marvel meeting was about the possibility of a fourth Thor movie. Not only has Waititi shared his desire to potentially do another movie in the franchise, but Chris Hemsworth has as well. Although we will have to wait to see what happens in Avengers 4 and the fate of the Avengers, the possibility of a Thor 4 does seem rather feasible.
If Taika Waititi is not taking on the role of director for Thor 4 or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, then what could he be working on for Marvel?
Having seen Howard the Duck pop up in previous Guardians of the Galaxy movies, there is a chance Marvel might want to give the intelligent duck from Duckworld a chance to be a star once again. And who better to make that happen than the man who gave us a funny, lighthearted Thor and a talking boulder named Korg?
Another possibility comes from the upcoming Fox and Disney merger that would see a number of Marvel properties returning to the fold. Taika Waititi might be tasked with giving the Fantastic Four another chance to shine, but this time in a way that makes fans happy. Of course with how recently an attempt was made to reboot the Fantastic Four, this idea seems less likely.
Heroic Hollywood threw out the idea of the Eternals as a possible project for the director. And while we know that there is talk of an Eternals movie thanks to IGN, we don’t know if or when it will happen. However, learning more about Thanos’ people would certainly be fascinating, especially if they turn up in Avengers 4 to offer their help and assistance.
Seeing Taika Waititi’s take on the Eternals and their cosmic origins could be a refreshing approach to a brand new franchise within the MCU. Getting a blend of both serious and comedic storytelling might just be what Marvel needs after both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4.
And this is all just the tip of the iceberg for Marvel. There are tons of characters out there that have not had their stories told yet. Any one of them could pop up and be the perfect vehicle for Taika Waititi’s brand of storytelling.
We will have to wait to learn what project the director will be working on with Marvel, but for now, we have our theories. Plus, we still have to learn the fate of all of our heroes in Avengers 4, so we may not want to look too far ahead just yet.
