Kendall Jenner under fire after tone-deaf comment about models

Kendall Jenner made some tone-deaf comments about her career that demonstrate just how privileged she is. Fellow models are not happy, and are firing back.

Another day, another Kendall Jenner scandal.

The second-youngest from the Kardashian-Jenner clan is in hot water with her fellow models after some comments she made to Love magazine were released online. In an excerpt from the publications 10th anniversary issue posted on Instagram on August 17th, Jenner discussed how she’s “selective” about the fashion shows she does every season, unlike the “other girls” who have to do up to “like 30 shows a season.”

"Since the beginning we’ve been super selective about what shows I would do. I was never one of those girls who would do like 30 shows a season or whatever the f–k those girls do. More power to ’em."

Other models in the industry are fighting back against this comment.

Most models are not famous by blood and they have to do as many shows as possible in order to keep their career afloat, unlike Jenner, and they made sure to let her know.

Model Daria Strokous replied to the comments on her Instagram story, stating, “‘Whatever the f*ck those girls do’ is do their very best to make their way up AND try to make some money so that they can provide for themselves and their families. Oh, and it’s 70 shows a season by the way and we are all f*cking proud of every single one of the girls that did it.”

Other models including Teddy Quinlivan and Amber Wotcomb also fired back at the reality TV star’s tone-deaf remarks. On Quinlivan’s Instagram story, she roasted Jenner and listed all the reasons why “those girls” have to work so many shows, including the points that they “make expanetially (sic) less for the same jobs as you”, “have to show up ON TIME not an hour before the show starts”,  and “weren’t born into privilege like you.”  Another model, Sarah Brannon, shared Quinlivan’s statement on her own story, and Quinlivan has since deleted the original.

Wotcomb shared a screenshot of Love‘s Instagram post, underlining Jenner’s quote, stating “…this kinda disrespect towards other models who have NO NAME for themselves walking into the industry is disgusting” with the hashtag “#ENDTHEPRIVILEGE” across the photo.

Hello Giggles shared a statement from Kendall Jenner’s rep, in which her team said

"The quote was taken out of context. Midthought she realized the number of shows some models walk a season is closer to 80. The point was that it’s their path and ‘the more power to them.’ She admires their hard work and dedication. It’s an accomplishment."

Kendall Jenner isn’t the only famous name in the modeling industry who was basically handed their career. Fashion darlings like Bella and Gigi Hadid and Kaia Gerber (daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford) have all been taking over the industry, mostly due to their famous families.

Fame has indeed been Jenner’s catapult into a major modeling career, and unfortunately, there’s a stark lack of awareness about that in these comments.

Though Jenner has apologized, noting she never meant to offend fellow models, there’s something to be said about making this clear in the first place when speaking — not after a backlash.
