The Walking Dead’s season 9 trailer previews a new enemy for all
The Walking Dead’s season 9 trailer debuted at San Diego Comic-Con today. Despite everyone working to rebuild, a new enemy may tear it all down.
“New world. New Rules” is a fitting description for The Walking Dead‘s official season 9 trailer that just dropped at San Diego Comic-Con.
The trailer begins with a rhythmic beat, showing how far all the communities have come now that we’ve moved ahead in time. There are crops growing, buildings under construction. We spot a group heading into a museum to pick up some old-school transportation. Everyone — including ex-Saviors and the Sanctuary — has a shot at a new life.
Rick tells Negan that “It’s human nature to come together.”
But can it all last?
That’s the question Negan proposes to Rick, as he sits behind bars in a dark, secluded cell. Fans of the comics know very well what Negan’s situation is as a prisoner. He’s meant to sit there and suffer as everyone else thrives. But unlike the comics, Carl is gone and it seems Rick will be the one frequenting Negan’s cell, as he tells him “It’s been a while since we had one of these talks.”
Negan, arrogant as always, tells Rick in a raspy voice (that throat cut likely didn’t help his vocals) to return to him “when it finally goes to shit.”
Negan isn’t the only one questioning Rick’s ability to lead, or if he’ll be successful in keeping the peace. Maggie asserts that she is ready to lead, whether Rick is willing to step down or not. Daryl also appears to be on the outs with Rick, with both questioning if they’re on each other’s side.
The recent sneak peek leading up to today’s trailer already showed us how communities are working together, but that can fall all too quickly if people can’t let go of the past. It is obvious that the communities are holding onto issues from the past. The Saviors are easily the biggest target, and today’s trailer previews tension and full-on brawls between groups because of that.
A few key questions we had from the end of season 8 may have been answered? Such as is that Maggie’s baby in her hands? Did she finally give birth? And Jadis and the helicopter are back, and she looks to be communicating with it — so that could be good, or bad, for everyone else.
There are also a bunch of new faces this season, including Eleanor Matsuura as Yumiko and Dan Fogler as Luke. Both are characters from the comics, but we’ll see if they follow those storylines or are given twists for the show.
Let’s hope these communities can stop fighting so much with each other, because there are much more terrifying and formidable enemies on the march towards them.
In the final moments of the trailer, we get a look at who comic fans know as The Whisperers. With them on the way, everyone from the Hilltop to the Sanctuary better get ready to team up. This is going to be one hell of a fight.
