Season 9 of The Waking Dead will focus more on rebuilding society, less on the undead

New details for season 9 of The Walking Dead reveal a functioning society with less fighting. But there’s still plenty of challenges for Rick Grimes.

The next season of The Walking Dead will be less focused on walkers, and more on rebuilding society. The news comes via an “insider” for Skybound, and it is both surprising and not. The show’s plot has been dominated by walkers and communities vs. other communities. Thus, it makes sense people of the apocalypse don’t want to live in the apocalypse anymore.

Fans recently sent in questions to the show’s Twitter account, and pertinent season 9 details were revealed within Skybound’s weekly Fan Mailbag.

One fan asked if we’d see things rebuilt thanks to the book Georgie gifted Maggie, or if the time jump would just start “after the war with everything pretty much back to normal.”

Skybound’s insider replied:

"We’ll actually get a bit of both. While some of the communities will experience more growth, each one still has a lot of work to do. You’re on to something with Georgie’s plans, as well. Those civilization blocks she gave to Maggie will definitely play into the rebuilding of the Hilltop and beyond."

The details above make sense along with recent set photos that show Maggie, Rick, Michonne and others riding along in carriages, riding horses, etc. — strong signs that things have progressed. The insider added that as the communities rebuild, we’ll see less fighting and more rebuilding. We can also expect to see more people “on the road a lot more than recent seasons.”

As for any details of how or why Rick will exit the show, Skybound’s insider explained:

"Rick will face a lot of challenges when we return for Season 9 this Fall. As for your question, we saw in the Season 8 Finale that Maggie, Daryl, and Jesus were very much against Rick’s decision to save Negan – and that resentment will continue to cause problems in Season 9."

As mentioned previously here on Culturess, Rick faces a very real danger of being taken out by those closest to him. Per the insider, there’s some potentially ominous news surrounding Maggie already — specifically about her baby. When asked what was up with that pregnancy, we’re simply told, “You’ll see.” That could be good or bad. And if things go bad for Maggie’s baby, we can easily see her go down the path of destruction. Michonne better watch out for her man.

Speaking of Michonne, one positive detail was revealed for our favorite katana-wielding hero. Michonne and Judith will have “more mother/daughter time.” Thank goodness, because someone needs to be around for that baby (sorry, but it’s true).

While we don’t have a specific date for when season 9 will air, new seasons tend to come out in October. Per the insider, we could listen to a few songs to prepare ourselves for what to expect, including: “Brand New Day” by Morrison, “Live and Let Die” by Guns ‘N Roses, and “Just Like Starting Over” by John Lennon.

Take from that what you will.
