Westworld mobile is already in trouble with a very big lawsuit
Well, that didn’t take long. Westworld’s mobile iteration is already facing a massive lawsuit from none other than Bethesda Softworks.
One of Westworld‘s favorite sayings is “These violent delights have violent ends.” It turns out that that might just be true for Westworld itself, at least for the mobile game.
Per Variety, Bethesda Softworks has hit Warner Bros. and the game developer, Behaviour, with a lawsuit for allegedly copying Fallout Shelter.
It all comes down to the idea of code. Here’s the relevant bit of the claim from Variety:
"Behaviour illegally used the same copyrighted source code from ‘Fallout Shelter’ to develop ‘Westworld,’ and copied Fallout Shelter’s game design, art, animations, gameplay features, and other elements. As a result of Behaviour and Warner Bros’ unlawful conduct, ‘Westworld’ is a blatant ripoff of ‘Fallout Shelter’ with largely superficial, cosmetic changes."
To be fair to Bethesda, you can see some similarities in layout to Fallout Shelter just by looking at screenshots of the two, particularly in terms of layout and the game’s display. But that does not a copy make, not necessarily — Bethesda also alleges that you can spot similar bugs in both games.
Moreover, a quick check at the Google Play Store shows that Fallout Shelter is one of the top-grossing simulator games right now — which is not to be discounted. Bethesda seems to think that the alleged “ripoff” could very well threaten its good time with Fallout Shelter. Although Westworld has only had about a day on the market, it’s in second place on the “top free simulator” charts in the Google Play Store. In other words, if it gets people hooked, it could quickly start making money.
So, what’s to come? Bethesda’s complaint as shown by Variety has “jury trial demanded” written on it. Still, this was just filed, meaning we might not hear something for a while or at all if a settlement is reached.
Next: Is Westworld the game worth playing?
Still, you might want to hold off on spending any sort of money on Westworld the game. Bethesda wants the game scrubbed from distribution as part of its complaint.
