Have you wondered why Penny Haywood’s Boggart in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery always turns into a werewolf? You find out in a side quest in Year 3 that is all about dealing with fear.

There are various side quests you can take throughout Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery. Most of them are pretty standard and simple, but there’s one with a tale of death and fear. In Year 3, you get the chance to take the “Penny for Your Thoughts” challenge, which involves Penny Haywood, who all students have the chance to befriend.

It turns out that Penny has a fear of werewolves and we finally get the story of why Penny’s Boggart always turn into the creature. In 1985, her friend was killed by a werewolf. During the challenge, she wants to brew a potion to forget all the traumatic memories of the event, so she can get over the fear—as she doesn’t find it possible to ever overcome that fear naturally. After all, Penny’s friend wasn’t even a witch. Scarlett was a muggle and was curious about the creature, which led to her death. It’s understandable why she feels guilty and worries that she’ll never overcome the fear on her own.

The game is certainly following Harry Potter in the sense that death and painful memories are all part and parcel of the universe. In the fourth year, Harry watched a student die in front of his eyes. He had to deal with the memories and the knowledge that he was the only living person on the side of good that knew for a fact Voldemort was still alive.

While the game likely won’t take us through the same events as Harry (least not because Voldemort isn’t around!), it’s clear Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery isn’t going to shy away from the difficult subjects. However, nothing is likely any more disturbing or scary than we’d see in the books or the movies.

One thing the side quest does teach us is that we need to learn how to deal with fear. For Penny, she’s decided a potion is the way to go. However, that’s not always possible. It’s important to tackle the reasons for the fear. However, while many of us fear something that might happen, Penny is dealing with PTSD from events that have happened. She knows the dangers and now she feels like she has a way of tackling the underlying reason for that PTSD.
