Another old friend that Debbie brings on to the heist team is Amita, played by Mindy Kaling. She’s an expert jewelry maker and is tapped to create a replica of the soon-to-be-stolen necklace. Making enough money on the job to not have to live with her mother anymore is the perfect incentive, and she jumps at the chance. We even get a glimpse of their relationship in the trailer, when Amita’s mom says, “This is why you have no husband.”

This is a common pressure that girls and women are supposed to live up to and is often toxic. In Ocean’s 8, Mindy’s character — and her mother — gets that standard happy ending, when she meets a man through Tinder and moves to Paris.

In real life, Mindy couldn’t be any further from the traditional ideals that were set upon her in the movie. She gave birth to a daughter in December, after hiding it from her Ocean’s 8 cast members during filming. Additionally, the father has not been revealed. Mindy even mentioned her single motherhood in the commencement speech she gave at her alma mater, Dartmouth, last weekend. I know that I’m not alone in wishing that B.J. Novak is the baby daddy. But I also would hope that he would very much a part of the family’s life. So, the storyline that’s none of my business continues.

I digress.

Mindy’s character Amita wears an awesomely caped gown, by Indian designer Naeem Khan, at the Met Gala in the movie. This look is a silver, embellished spin on the idea. And it’s clear, Mindy also wears a cape in real life.
