Noma Dumezweni made it very clear Donald Trump wasn’t welcome to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and it’s linked to why she believes the play is so popular.

It’s no secret that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’s actress Noma Dumezweni isn’t a big fan of President Donald Trump. As a former refugee, she doesn’t like his current stance on a number of topics and believes that the current political situation of America is one of the reasons the play is doing so well on Broadway. Many of the undertones are similar, albeit set in a magical world.

Dumezweni plays Hermione Granger in the production, set 19 years after the books and movies ended. It tells the tale of dark wizardry raising its ugly head again, which is part of the reason why the actress believes it’s so poignant with the political situation today. It tells the story of what could happen if things are allowed to brew beneath the surface; if voices aren’t allowed to be heard.

More from Harry Potter

The world of Harry Potter may not intentionally be political, but it’s clear that there are some undertones there. In fact, many people were quick to compare Trump with Voldemort during the election campaign and some of those comparisons have stuck.

"“We, all as human beings, are fighting to be connected. If you’re not seen and not heard, that’s where dangerous stuff happens. That’s where people under the radar do very cruel things.”"

However, Dumezweni never stated exactly why he wasn’t welcome; just that he wouldn’t be. Anyone else is, though, and she loves telling the story of Hermione and the others 19 years later.
