The stars of the supernatural show and their fans took to social media to express their shock and outrage about Shadowhunters’ cancellation after two years on the air.
The rumors are sadly true, Shadowhunters fans. After only three seasons, Freeform announced on Monday that it’s axing the show. This comes as a surprise to many, including the stellar cast themselves, who are shocked and heartbroken.
The show, based on the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, follows the story of 18-year-old Clary as she navigates her way through her new life as a Shadowhunter (a demon hunter with the blood of an angel). Along with her best friend, Simon, and fellow Shadowhunters — Jace, Isabelle, and Alec — Clary attempts to discover more about herself and this new world that her mother had kept hidden from her for years.
Once news broke that the show was cancelled, fans weighed in on the heartbreaking revelation via social media.
The cast of the hit drama also joined fans in tweeting about the cancellation:
Don't forget, angels, our journey is not over yet. We still have 12 episodes to go and more story to tell. We'll share BTS photos, live tweet, and much more. Thank you for your love and support! Together we'll make this memorable. x

First, I want to say thank you to the INCREDIBLE fans from all over the world! This has been an amazing journey being part of @ShadowhuntersTV & to have the opportunity to play the incomparable Magnus Bane. I am so proud of our magical cast, crew & writers for 3 wonderful seasons

#SaveShadowhunters has since been tweeted over one million times in an effort to hopefully “pull a Brooklyn Nine-Nine“ and see some action from companies such as Netflix or Hulu. That’s a sign of a particularly strong, passionate fanbase, and it might just work.

Freeform has announced that the show will resume in spring 2019 with twelve more episodes, ending with a two-part season finale. That’s a lot of time for things to happen, including a change in decision by Freeform or the show getting picked up elsewhere.
