Jennifer Lopez loves her family, owns that rockin’ bod, plus knows how to treat herself from time to time
Jennifer Lopez deserves cheers for changing the nation’s perception of curvy girls as a dancing, singing, acting triple threat!
Jennifer Lopez grew up in an era where size zero was supposed to be the goal. But J.Lo quickly turned that view into the outdated expectation it deserved to be. Now we embrace curves like Jenny from the Block, and its one of many beautiful reasons Lopez is our Wonder Woman of the Week!
J. Lo embraces her past as well as her curves
Rather than try to forget her roots, Lopez is proud of her history, she recently told In Style.
“I feel like my Bronx-girl, urban toughness is one of my biggest strengths. It’s who I am,” added Jennifer.
J.Lo also is candid about the way in which her generation “very much focused on size 0 models” even though she knew early on that size 0 “was just so unattainable for most normal people, including me.” Jennifer credits her mother and grandmother for teaching her that her curves are her “beautiful” heritage.
"Being curvy…was never a bad thing; it was actually something that was celebrated. I got a lot of flak for it from people in the industry [but].I was like, “This is who I am. I’m shaped like this.” Everybody I grew up with looked like that, and they were all beautiful to me. I didn’t see anything wrong with it. I still don’t!”"
She offers wise advice to her daughter
When it comes to her advice for her daughter Emme, Lopez revealed that she wants her little girl to learn to “love and respect herself first and to make sure she commands respect from others.” And while social media does offer fun, Jennifer reminds Emme that “at the end of the day you’re living in real time, where you have a core group of friends and family.”
J.Lo also instructs her 10-year-old to “focus on the things that matter: being a good person, friend, and daughter, being happy with herself, and doing the things she loves.” Emme recently attended one of her mom’s concerts, and she responded when Jennifer asked the ladies in the audience what they needed from the world.
Jennifer’s daughter yelled from the front row “Respect!” J.Lo is proud that she has taught her child that lesson at such a young age.
Lopez doesn’t stress aging
Sensationally energetic and glowing, Lopez isn’t giving away her anti-aging secret (has she found the Fountain of Youth?). Instead, she’s got the right approach in joking about getting older.
“At some point, I’m going to age,” teased J.Lo. “They’ll say, She looks old! But, right now, I’m holding it together.”
Jennifer is more than “holding it together.” She’s in such great shape that her boyfriend Alex Rodriguez says that she moves like she’s 25. The Dance Again singer also knows how to relax after work, sharing her delightfully simple evening traditions.
“I’ll go home, have a nice dinner, then I’ll go to my bedroom, have a nice bath. I’ll have a chocolate cookie with milk, I’ll watch TV,” revealed the mom of two.
In addition to Emme, Lopez has a son, Max, who is also 10 (they’re twins!). And they always take first place in J.Lo’s life. Jennifer’s personal life “takes priority” always, she emphasized. That approach earns praise from Lopez’s World of Dance colleague Derek Hough.
“She can be in the middle of a comment [on the show], and she’ll go, ‘Oh, my kids are calling me.’ Her priority is her family — it’s been a lovely thing to see,” said Hough.
