Why Prince William and Kate Middleton chose Louis for their royal baby’s name
Prince William and Kate Middleton’s newborn royal son has a lot of history behind his adorable name.
Welcome Prince Louis!
Prince William and Kate Middleton’s new bundle of joy had his name revealed early this morning. We have to say it’s absolutely perfect.
“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles,” Kensington Palace announced in a statement Friday. “The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge.”
Prince Louis’ full name is Louis Arthur Charles.
Following brother George Alexander Louis and sister Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, Louis’ name is a little unique as his first name appears within George’s full name. While William and Kate had plenty of royal monikers to choose from, there is significant meaning as to why they went with Louis.
It is not uncommon for the same name to be used within a royal family’s lineage. Queen Victoria decided to use the name of her husband, Albert, for all of her son’s names.
Prince Louis’ name (which means “renowned warrior” in French) may have been chosen to honor Prince Phillip. His grandfather was Prince Louis Alexander of Battenberg.
Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine, told People that the name choice was “an indirect nod to the Duke of Edinburgh and his side of the family. I did think that Philip might have appeared in there somewhere.”
The newborn prince’s name holds weight with Prince Charles, as well. Earl Louis Mountbatten was his great-uncle and was tragically assassinated in 1979 by the IRA.
In an interesting family move, Will and Kate have so far opted not to include a name from the Middleton family, such as Michael and James for Kate’s father and brother. James was high on British bookmaker’s list, as well as Prince Louis’ middle name (as it does appear in both Charles and Williams’ name as well).
