The Weasley twins even confused their own mother at times, but it is actually possible to tell Harry Potter’s Fred and George apart.

There’s something to be said for likeness if your own mother can’t tell you apart, right? Well, it looks like Molly Weasley just wasn’t looking at her twins well enough.

That’s not surprising considering she had six children and a husband who may as well have been her seventh at times! It turns out that you could tell Harry Potter’s Fred and George Weasley apart and that was before one lost an ear!

There’s a 200-time mentioned difference in the books

When you read the books, you’ll likely see Fred’s name mentioned more, and that’s before he’s killed off at the very end (sorry for those who haven’t got to the end yet, but it’s been more than a decade!).

Fred got 900 mentions to George’s 731. That’s almost 200 extra mentions in the novels. Fred was far more outgoing of the two, causing more mischief and generally being the braver one. When he was killed off it was both surprising and heartbreaking, but J.K. Rowling says he was always going to be the one to die. To be honest, when you think about it, then that makes sense. He would have been the first to go into battle or lead a charge.

One could have been a politician

The two ended up opening their joke store, but one of the twins showed abilities to be a politician. That was George. While he wasn’t the most outgoing or risk-taking of the two brothers, he was diplomatic and extremely smart. It wouldn’t be surprising if he was the head behind the business.

If someone needed to mitigate damage (and the twins always needed that with their pranks) then George would be the one to do it. He also tended to be the more sympathetic of the two brothers and he would explain more—just look at who actually explained the Marauder’s Map to Harry.

Despite all their similarities in looks, Fred and George were two different characters. It’s easy to see them as the same, though. Yet, had they been in different years, you would have likely seen all the differences. But the fact they were twins also added to the idea of yin and yang. Fred and George balanced each other and needed to come as one package.
