Harry Potter: Nagini is not the snake Harry freed on Dudley’s birthday

facebooktwitterreddit

There has been a rumor for a long time that the snake in the zoo in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was Nagini. That is definitely not the case.

Nagini is known as Voldemort’s loyal snake and one of the Horcruxes and it looks like Nagini’s origin story is about to come out in Fantastic Beasts 2. That has caused an old Harry Potter rumor to start spreading again. Fans believe that the snake in the zoo that Harry released in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was Voldemort’s snake Nagini.

That definitely isn’t the case. The idea of Nagini and the zoo snake being the same is a rumor that has been debunked many times before, so it’s surprising that it’s come up yet again.

Genderswap of the snakes?

The main evidence against the idea of Nagini and the zoo snake being the same is that they’re different genders. When the zoo snake hissed thanks, it was clearly a male voice. Nagini is female.

Sure, it’s possible that the director had no idea that Nagini would be female at the time of filming Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, but surely this is important information J.K. Rowling would have shared had it been true as she would have known how Nagini story played out.

Different types of snakes

Fans who own snakes and know a lot about the creatures have been quick to point a flaw in the idea that the zoo snake and Nagini are the same. They are both different types of snakes. The exact type of snakes has been debated for many years, but almost all agree that they are definitely different types of snakes.

The coloring is also different. While Nagini was CGI’d, for the most part, she still had to look like a real snake in terms of coloring. If the two snakes were supposed to be the same, they would have had the same coloring.

What about J.K. Rowling’s quote?

Some Harry Potter fans are quick to point out that J.K. Rowling once said that the two snakes were the same. However, it’s not possible to find a source for this particular quote to find out whether she really said it. Remember not to believe everything you read on the internet! For example, our “Harry Potter reboot in the works” article, published on April 1st, is still being believed. Why? Because they only read the headline.

If Rowling did say the quote, then she made a mistake about her own franchise. The quote includes that Nagini was the final Horcrux that Voldemort created, but we all know that wasn’t the case. Harry was the last (and accidental) Horcrux.

Will we get Nagini’s origin story?

There’s hope that Fantastic Beasts will touch on Nagini’s origin story. This is certainly the chance to do it, especially as the later movies in the franchise should include Tom Riddle attending Hogwarts.
