We love Tina Fey, but SNL could have gotten someone else to host the finale

SNL revealed its last string of hosts for the show’s 43rd season. That includes long-time cast member and frequent guest Tina Fey.

Saturday Night Live had a good lineup of hosts this season: Gal GadotChadwick Boseman and Sterling K. Brown, to name a few. But SNL might be dropping the ball with its final host of its 43rd season.

Recently, SNL announced that the show would resume May 5 with Donald Glover and a performance from. . . . also Donald Glover as his musical persona Childish Gambino. He’s an extraordinary talent who’s had a lot of success with his show Atlanta and Solo: A Star Wars Story coming out at the end of May.

On Wednesday, though, SNL reveal its final two hosts, Amy Schumer and Tina Fey. I’ll reserve my judgment for Schumer, but Tina Fey, at this point, is a bit over-used in the SNL lineup.

It’s not to say that there’s anything wrong with Tina Fey. She was SNL’s first female head writer and had a brilliant run as a cast member in the 2000s. Even after her departure in 2006, Fey still stayed relevant with her portrayal as Sarah Palin during the 2008 presidential election. And that appearance was fine since she was long-missed; it was great to see her.

Now, more than 10 years after she’s left the show, it’s hard to get excited to hear that she’s hosting again. In 2011, Fey hosted for the first time. Then she came back again in 2013, and again in 2015. Not to mention, just last summer, she appeared on SNL’s Weekend Update Summer Edition. (Remember when she ate that whole cake on national TV?)

Perhaps it’s a life-long goal of Fey to join Justin Timberlake and Tom Hanks in the five-timers’ club. But, really, her slot as a host could have been filled by a talent who haven’t gotten the chance to make it to the SNL stage yet.

Not to mention, former cast members Bill Hader and Will Ferrell already hosted this season. Is it completely fair to fill up the limited schedule with three former cast members as hosts?

What makes SNL fun is seeing your favorite celebrities go on stage a make a fool of themselves. We’ve had plenty of times to see cast members do that every week. But having someone new to the stage is usually just better.

Serious actors like Chadwick Boseman always kill it in the sketches where they get to let go and be funny. And evening seeing a musician like Chance the Rapper take the stage is refreshing because, hey, musicians don’t get to act goofy as actors much.

So while it will be pleasant to see what Fey has to offer this time around — perhaps we’ll get a Mean Girls musical sketch — a newer talent might have made for a more enjoyable show.
