Harry Potter and the Cursed Child continues to hold the Olivier Awards record

Hamilton tried and failed to knock Harry Potter and the Cursed Child off its Olivier Awards perch.

It’s Olivier Awards seasons and “Hamilton” tried its hardest to knock off “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” from its lofty position of gongs. The American musical made it look possible after becoming one of the most popular musicals on the West End and it even received 13 nominations, but it just couldn’t convert all those nominations into wins.

Whatever you think of the storyline for the “Cursed Child,” and I understand those who just view it as fanon despite Rowling stating it is canon, the stage production picked up nine Olivier Awards during the last season. “Hamilton” only walked home with seven wins and, while an amazing feat, it just wasn’t good enough for the wizarding production.

More from Harry Potter

For those who haven’t seen “Hamilton” (this is certainly a must), it tells the story of the founding fathers of America. One of those to take home a gong was Michael Jibson for best supporting actor, who plays George III. He mentioned why it’s possibly done as well as it has for attendees, as it mixes the storytelling and pop culture to tell a story like never before.

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” will likely take some time to beat. After all, it’s a production set in a vocal and passionate fandom. For every person who doesn’t like it, there’s one who does. And while divided, it has certainly been a show to impress from a production standpoint. The acting has been formidable, with most moving from the West End to Broadway to bring the production State Side.

Before “Cursed Child,” “Matilda” sat on the top spot back in 2012 with seven wins (“Hamilton” matches that), so maybe the world of Potter will see five years holding the glory before something else takes over.
