Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers: Firing away

Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers have a new minute and a half of footage to break down and analyze from a familiar location.

Warning: In case it’s not quite clear enough above, there is video of Game of Thrones season 8 filming. Although it doesn’t show much, it is very definitely a spoiler.

Game of Thrones season 8 hasn’t taken down a green screen near Magheramorne just yet, despite reports that production will kick off soon down in Spain. In fact, things still seem to be going strong back in Northern Ireland, with more huge things getting filmed for season 8 shenanigans.

The latest comes from Davy Orr on Twitter.

Yesterday, he posted a teaser image for what was to come later that day, showing a huge catapult almost as tall as the green screen itself:

“Weather permitting” turned out to be the key words, since it apparently was a bit of a wild night:

The footage is a tiny bit blurry, but we’re most intrigued by the flames to the right of center in the frame. It appears as though the catapult has been prepared to fire. The fact that we can see fire might suggest it’s not going to launch a flaming missile at the army of the dead. Still, we can’t really rule it out either. It would make a little bit of sense if it were a fiery projectile is all we’re saying; fire is an effective deterrent for the undead.

It’s also fairly unclear who’s standing by the catapult itself, other than that it appears to be four or possibly five figures. With the green screen, they could even be anywhere, but their bulk and previous knowledge both suggest they’re up North. So who’s firing this?

The fire alone makes it likely to be a human army, but where would Daenerys and Jon put a trebuchet? Just outside of Winterfell? A misfire within the castle walls would likely drastically damage the integrity of the structure. (That would be, um, bad, to make an understatement.)

Do you have a better theory as to who’s using this and why?
