Lucky movie-goers got to bring their pups to a dog-friendly Isle of Dogs screening

The movies are going to the dogs! A movie theater in San Francisco just had a dog-friendly showing of Wes Anderson’s newest movie, Isle of Dogs.

You can expect a lot from a Wes Anderson movie. You’ll have a gorgeous, incredibly precise aesthetic. It’ll be quirky, fun and a little melancholy. You’ll see your outsiders. What you’re probably not expecting are dogs sitting next to you and running up and down the aisles. But that’s what one audience got during a screening at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco.

According to The New York Times, Andrea Bertolini, a senior account executive at Allied Integrated Marketing, which is publicizing Isle of Dogs, came up with the incredible idea for a dog-friendly screening of Isle of Dogs. Hey, it’s a movie about dogs. Why shouldn’t the dogs get to see it?

She then worked with the people from the New York Dog Film Festival to set up the BYOD (Bring Your Own Dog) event, which is the greatest thing I’ve ever heard. The IFC Center in New York is also holding a screening with the Best Friends Animal Society, and there will be screenings in Britain as well.

The screening in San Francisco rolled out the red carpet before the pups settled in to watch the stop-motion movie about a group of Japanese dogs banished to a dump called Trash Island. They even had a spokesdog, an absolutely adorable one-eyed Bichon-Shih Tzu named Pirate. They also had someone from a local rescue come to talk about adoption.

This could have been the greatest idea ever or a total disaster. There is no middle ground when you have dogs filling up a movie theater. But we think it’s brilliant.

Sure, some dogs had some trouble sitting through the movie. They’re not exactly known for having a long attention span and aren’t necessarily movies’ biggest demographic. Some didn’t want to sit on the seats, some wanted to explore or meet other dogs and people, and some just couldn’t figure out if they were in the vet’s waiting room or not.

But plenty of dogs had a great time taking in the latest flick and munching on some snacks. And come on, this is for us. There’s just something amazing and hilarious about seeing people bring their dogs to a Wes Anderson film.

Anderson’s Isle of Dogs is in theaters March 23.
