Why is Harry Potter not on Netflix?
By Callum Gunn
Fans around the world want to watch Harry Potter on Netflix, but have found out it’s not available. Nor has it ever been available in the U.S., the UK and many other parts of the world. But why?
You would think the most influential movies of Millennials would be available on one of the most popular streaming services in the world, wouldn’t you? Surprisingly, the Harry Potter movies are not available on Netflix and haven’t ever been in many parts of the world. While it’s possible they may make it at some point, we’re not holding our breath for it!
But just why has Netflix never been given the right? While we can’t give the exact answer, we can speculate.

It’s likely all to do with licensing.
Yes, that pesky topic has come up again. The licensing deals prevent movies being available on certain channels and streaming services.
Most recently, some of the movies were available on Netflix New Zealand and Australia, but the titles have been pulled. They’ve never been available in the United States, United Kingdom, and many other parts of the world. It’s all likely due to the cost of the licensing, which Netflix is either refusing to pay or it keeps getting overshadowed by the companies that do get their hands on the licensing.

Don’t expect to see Harry Potter on Netflix for a long time. HBO has the licensing rights to air all eight movies and that is unlikely to change any time soon. In the UK, Sky has the rights. This does mean you can stream them online, but you need to do it through the right services.
