Harry Potter composer John Williams stepping down from another major franchise

The Oscar-winning composer is preparing to say goodbye to another major movie franchise.

John Willaims, well known for composing music for major blockbuster such as Schindler’s List, E.T., Jaws and Saving Private Ryan. To all of us Potter heads, Williams is best known for composing the music of the first three Harry Potter movies.

Williams stepped back from composing the remaining Harry Potter films but was asked to return to compose Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. Unfortunately, neither the director, David Yates, nor Williams schedules coincided with each other to allow for this return. Leaving Williams to say goodbye to the Harry Potter franchise with only three titles to his name.

And now Williams is getting ready to say goodbye to another major franchise as he has made it known that the current Star Wars movie he is working on will be his last.

Willaims to finish with Star Wars after Episode IX

Willaims has been involved with Star Wars since its inception. He composed the original score for the 1977 George Lucas movie and has been involved ever since. In a recent radio interview with KUSC, Williams explained that he never knew it would spawn into sequels and sequels for decades o come. That it has developed in the most amazing ways but when he is finished composing Episode IX, it will be his last. Explaining that it would be a nice round nine for the 86 year old composer and quite enough for him.

Other composers are waiting in the wings to fill the large void that Williams will leave. Ever since Disney branched out from the Skywalker story, it has allowed other composers to come in and put their unique touch to the movies.

Up Oscar winner Michael Giacchino composed the music for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Oscar nominee John Powell are working on the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story.
